The monorail cars were "compartmentalized" (each car held maybe 10 people (gondola-sized) and only had one exit on each side).
There was a proposal to re-erect it in the West End as a circulator, but the West End was a more dangerous place back then - hookers and johns, etc. - and one reason against was that it was thought to be a safety risk to have compartments since someone could be trapped with an attacker.
I suppose the same applies to a gondola.
I think the UK got rid of its compartmentalized trains in the 1980s or 90s.
