That small "park" area is in serious need of an upgrade. Maybe something can happen in conjunction with the final building at "The Creek", which BTW, seems to have missed it's perfect presale window now that prices are retreating. I have no idea why they waited so long.

No it's much older than that. More like expo. I think it was blue originally

Yup.

You can see a similar red version in this pic:

Pretty sure that's just the old housing for the Science World ball machine. My seven year old self distinctly remembers it being a red cage.

They were bigger than that - they were bandstands:

The fact that a temporary monorail and gondola were built and torn down still mystifies me.

February 12th 2019 Public Hearing – Rental Housing in Kitsilano Draws Over 100 Public Comments – Is There Room for Renters in Vancouver or Does Multi-Family Mean 4 Storey Condos

February 12th, 2019 – Public Hearing
To say it’s rare for a rezoning application to receive over 100 comments is an understatement, for a large majority to be in favour is almost unheard of.

However, that’s exactly the reaction that has been generated by this meeting’s first item, a 5 storey rental building in East Kitsilano. Given the extremely rough reception Hannah and I endured at the open house, we can’t say we’re not pleased to see the out pouring of support. The only question is whether these voices will be respected by city council.

After all, the previous meeting hinted that some Councillors now have reservations about the Grandview Woodlands Community Plan, which bodes poorly for the second item on the agenda, a passive house 6 floor rental building on the northern tip of Commercial Drive. Like the last item, the choice here is between a new rental housing building, or a shorter strata building, which would be permitted under the current zoning.

The last item is all about location, as it brings 63 strata homes to one of the most family friendly areas of Marpole. Despite its placement on the agenda, it may not even see one speaker in favour or against.

Backlash Expectations

1906 – 1918 West 4th Ave – High
Even though the majority of the 128 comments were in favour, we expect the extremely toxic voices from the open house to make their presence known.

815 – 825 Commercial Dr & 1680 Adanac St – High
Feedback reveals that many believe 6 floor rental buildings feel out of place in the Grandview Woodlands.

441 – 463 West 59th Ave – Very Low
Literally only one person appears to be against this proposal.

the Monorail was sold to Alton Towers, and i think the gondola was also sold somewhere.

i heard a rumour from someone who worked on the original planning for Yaletown and he told me that some of the building spaces/lots/etc. were designated for a possible future monorail/gondola should the future city ever want to do that. but he also said there were never any plans, just a "why not do it that way just in case"

The monorail cars were "compartmentalized" (each car held maybe 10 people (gondola-sized) and only had one exit on each side).
There was a proposal to re-erect it in the West End as a circulator, but the West End was a more dangerous place back then - hookers and johns, etc. - and one reason against was that it was thought to be a safety risk to have compartments since someone could be trapped with an attacker.

I suppose the same applies to a gondola.

I think the UK got rid of its compartmentalized trains in the 1980s or 90s.

Life Saving Homes and Services Face Off Against Allegedly Biased City Council at February 20th Public Hearing
Public Hearing – February 20th, 2019

First and Only Item – 1636 Clark Drive and 1321-1395 East 1st Avenue

Imagine there was a proposal to slow the deaths from Vancouver’s opioid crises, to bring families in off the street at rents they could afford, and it all complied with the neighbourhood plan. How could anyone oppose something that even the Vancouver Police Department says poses no threat to the community?

Unfortunately, it turns out a lot of people can. Since it was first announced, there have been fund-raising efforts not to help homelessness, but to ensure this answer is located somewhere else. What started with a small group, led to a leaflet campaign, multiple meetings with BC Housing, and now a self-appointed area council has taken up the charge to oppose these life-saving services on the edge of their neighbourhood.

Backlash Expectations

Neither Hannah nor I are saying these people are monsters, cold-hearted, or even selfish. Honestly, despite their fierce opposition, most seem to have been rather civil. Of course, there are professionals who have chosen to act otherwise, promising legal action if democracy does not result in their chosen result.

Needless to say, we expect the backlash at this meeting to be high, but it doesn’t represent the public at large. After all, over 120 people have said they support these services at this location, while only 74 expressed concern. Still, those who turn out to this public hearing have the best chance to influence city council at the last minute. Though, according to members of that aforementioned neighbourhood group, commitments have already been made by some city councillors to reject the proposal.

There were two gondolas for Expo:

The gondolas were sold to a mountain in Montana even has the same paint job on the body?:

I was reading somewhere that these type of gondolas are becoming a problem cause people are being assaulted in them and there is no escape.

Re the backlash people really ruin good things

It was Expo - it was like the gondola across the PNE.

Excellent idea for Granville Island up to the Granville bridge, instead of an elevator!
