Update email I received:

broadwaysubway Project TRAN:EX <[email protected]>
4:04 PM (1 hour ago)
to broadwaysubway

Dear Subscriber,

In September 2018, full funding for the Broadway Subway, from VCC-Clark Station to Arbutus Street, was confirmed and work is underway to prepare for the construction phase in 2020.

Early work to install new trolley wires, lampposts, and traffic light improvements begins on February 11, 2019 and will continue to 2020. This work will enable bus detours during Subway construction in 2020.

The first phase of early work starts on 12th Avenue between Arbutus and Granville streets. Intersection work will also begin on 12th Avenue and Willow Street, between Oak and Cambie streets. There will be no change to transit service during this period, and minimal disruption to pedestrian, cycling, and vehicle traffic.

Find out more about the early work here.https://na01.safelinks.protection.outloo...UDoS2hlNhIljgnYvQdU%3D&reserved=0%3E

From the sounds of that, seems like their preparing to have the 17 Oak go along 12th between Cambie and Oak, and the 16 Arbutus go along 12th between Granville and Arbutus. The 14 UBC might go along 4th to Macdonald then back on to Broadway. It will be interesting to see how these additional trolley wires might help with detours in the post-broadway-extension future too. Happy to hear they are preemptively adding some resilience to the trolley network; I assume most of the trolley wires might have to be taken down along Broadway between Main and Arbutus for construction work.

General question - does the BC Government/ Ministry of transportation take the lead on these sort of infrastructure projects? and then pass the completed piece to translink?

Yes, that's correct.
There's a special project office created by the Province to oversee the construction.
The Province will contract with the successful proponent and once completed, the line will be turned over to TransLink
(that's for an extension of a TransLink operated line)
The Canada Line is physically separate and operated by a private contractor.

This is how it has been typically done in the past.

I heard last year that for the upcoming Translink scope projects like Pattullo there was talk of Translink managing directly. Not sure if that has materialized or not...

Interesting. I thought Québec was the only province that does that for project.

The Pattullo Bridge replacement project has been handed over entirely to the province.

Public Agenda for Feb 15 Mayors Council meeting has been released.

Quote:
RECOMMENDATION:

That the Mayors’ Council:
1. Endorse a SkyTrain Millennium Line extension from Arbutus Street to UBC as the technology basis to advance to the next stage of project development for Rail to UBC, including development of alternative concept designs and preliminary business case inputs;

Is this a very similar statement as the "Skytrain to Langley" extension? I'd expect the wording/priority to be the same from a political perspective.

No. Here's the agenda from that meeting: https://www.translink.ca/-/media/Documen...s-Council-PUBLIC-MTG--Dec-13-REVISED.PDF

The NDP are subjecting Broadway to the Community Benefits Agreement requiring workers to be under one of their preferred unions...likely driving up costs?

Maybe, maybe not. Most of the cost comes from land acquisition and construction itself, not personnel.

I barely contained my laughter over this: White Rock Mayor Darryl Walker worried the council seemed to be “rushing headlong into something several years out,” without really knowing what future growth of the region would look like.

Really? The busiest bus route in the region that's been studied to death and he thinks this is "rushing headlong"? Even with half as many people riding the 99B it would still be looking at an upgrade to Skytrain, just maybe not as quickly as it is now.

Well they own the land where the stations are now so I assume most of the cost is capital and labour.

Received my letter regarding trolley wires going up on my street. I also noticed fluorescent pink paint on the curbs, equally spaced along 12th. I suspect the location for new poles.

Looks like they are moving ahead pretty quickly.

Let's be honest, he has likely not been north of the Fraser at any time this millennium.

TransLink does not - they own a few lots around three or so future station sites; those may or may not become stations. They still need to get the rest from private owners.

Nor do they own the roadspace (that's the City), nor the TBM, other construction equipment or building materials (that's the contractor).
