OC Transpo's travel planner certainly has issues. I don't work downtown, but my daughter will probably be going to the University of Ottawa next year so I decided to check out what her commute would be like. I was surprised that according to the old and new travel planners, if she catches the last Connexion bus, it would take a minute longer even though both routes have a transfer. I then realized that the Travel Planner includes an 11 minute walk from uOttawa station to the University but only 3 minutes from LAURIER E / CUMBERLAND.

In reality, the train could make things a bit faster, depending on what building her first class is in. If nothing else, it will be more reliable as the bus is likely to get stuck in traffic and take longer than scheduled.

Right now this winter it usually takes me 75-90 minutes to get home by bus. Horrendous. (Official schedules says it should take about an hour.)
With LRT: 46-52 minutes.

Mornings are also improved. I sometimes get to work as quickly as 50 minutes. Typically takes an hour.
With LRT: 40-45 minutes.

I work in Hull so it's already one or two transfers as it is.

LRT is almost as fast as cycling to work. Takes 35 minutes on my road bike.

The planner gives me the same time currently and with LRT, but the current travel planner recommends a high risk transfer between two local routes that I would never attempt. I would expect about a 25% time savings in real life conditions.

Last night I had an interesting encounter with someone close to the project at a high level. They weren't willing to give full details obviously, but here's what I took from the conversation:

Get ready for another delay.

Apparently there are big issues and related to who will pay for various problems. They said 🞵🞵🞵🞵 is going to hit the fan in a meeting on Monday, and tonight on CBC news they were talking about a major update coming on Tuesday.

Apparently there have been problems such as a fire at a substation. And everything, especially the catenary system is 🞵🞵🞵🞵, and the maintenance group will spend the next 30 years patching and fixing basically everything. The contract was written in a way that has allowed the system to be built at the bare minimum requested, which will screw the system as time goes on.

Also, regarding trains 33 and 34, whatever their issue is, it wasn't just a lost computer. Trains 35 and 36 were fast-tracked because 33 and 34 wont be ready.

Basically its just a disaster of issues and no one wants to take responsibility.

I have said this before and I will say it again, construction on Stage 1 will not finish before stage 2 construction begins.

^^^ So 35 and 36 are under construction then?

From the pictures it looks like even the underground stations are done now. The contrast between Rideau in mid-November versus now is quite something (I guess that's where all the workers have been!); curious to find out more about what's going on.

Wouldn't that just hurt RTG, seeing as how they're the ones on the hook for maintenance until mid-century?

That would be true if the city were actually willing to impose penalties.

Yeah, if I were you I would take the numerous unsubstantiated, anonymous reports of doom and gloom from ‘insider’ information with a large dose of skepticism.

Personally, I’ll wait for official news to be made public...as everything else is pure speculation.

(Funny, the internet is indeed a place where anonymous folks often crave attention no matter the vehicle used to get it...so some posts are wholely unsurprising to me.)

This doesn’t really make any sense. RTG is the builder and the maintainer, so why would they screw themselves?

Someone on Twitter pointed out the eastern replacement for the 95, route 39, shows as 30 minute service most of the day. So this is a huge service cut from Trim or Place to Blair.

And this is a future LRT corridor?

I think the trips to/from downtown that currently rely on the Transitway will benefit from the reliability - my own trip home for example currently is 20 min on those rare ideal runs during the afternoon rush - usually closer to 30 min

but with the train a hopefully-consistent 23 min

The real loss will be my commute to/from the old Nortel - currently there's the 101 or 103 for a pretty quick and direct 28 min

but with the post-train changes will take 50% longer

I don't see why they're cancelling the 101/103 at this point. There's lots of people who rely on it to get to Carling Campus, particularly from the east end. Stage 1 and the 101/103 don't overlap; they serve different commutes. Even if/when Stage 2 is up and running, 101/103 would still be a useful crosstown express.

RTG has subcontracted the maintenance contract to Rideau Transit Maintenance Group, so they can pack up and leave town, with the subcontractor on the hook for the actual maintenance. Here's a now-defunct job posting for maintenance workers.

Well, it is hard to see what is on the other side of the glass curtain. Can you see if the platforms are done yet? I don't see the yellow edge strips; but maybe that is just an illusion.

I found the picture of St. Laurent interesting.

There seem to still be a lot of ceiling tiles missing - indicating that there is still a lot of work (likely wiring/cabling) still being done. Couple that with the blank displays on the fare gates (no green arrows), and I think that there is still a lot of work and testing to be done at this station.

As I say; interesting. Especially since this is an 'eastern' station, so it has been under construction since nearly day one - but it is still not ready.

Pictures are from the Feb. 4 update

I am correct. Between Greenboro and Billings, Route 6 will be cut from every 20 minutes on Saturday mornings to every 24 minutes (keep your schedule handy). On Sundays, service is cut from every 20 minutes to every 30 minutes.

My impression from poking around is that we get no enhanced community bus service with the opening of the Confederation Line. It can't be helping that we are maintaining detour service far longer than expected.

This is the trade off of having most (not all) local routes in Orleans extended to Blair. I guess it gets more difficult to get to Place d'Orleans with the direct route only running once every half hour.

This is why they chose to designate rapid routes separate from frequent routes. The future will have many rapid routes not being frequent.

I think ever since the sinkhole they've been diverting a lot of labour from the eastern stations to the tunnel.
