Not sure how I feel about that Peel Street proposal. Reminds me of a futuristic car more than a building.

Another large office proposal for Vancouver. Architecture has really had a major boost over the last few years downtown.

Vancouver is going to have quite a legacy with not one but two BIG projects. I love how different they feel from one another.

I really like this one. A breath of fresh air compared to what is usually posted in the thread. What an atrocious floor plan. Fingers crossed they find someone that doesn't mind. I could only see this in Vancouver so it's in the right place

Wow, that is fabulous. I was thinking Calgary was becoming Canada's design city, but Vancouver is smassshing that game! Damn!

The reality is Calgary has a long ways to go in developing local and attracting foreign talent to be given the moniker of Canada's design city. That wasn't a smart thing to say.

I wouldn't agree, for a city under 2 000 000, we've probably attracted the largest number of the biggest names in architecture in the entire Western Hemisphere (of course out of cities 2 million or less), while easily competing with some cities several times our size. It's definitely not a stretch to say Calgary has a lot of amazing designs. You are right about our local talent though, long way to go. Moda and Battistella are showing a lot of promise though.

I've been a fan of the direction Vancouver's been heading in with their recent proposals, but I'm not feeling that latest office proposal. It just looks awkward to me and looks like it would age badly over time. Maybe it'll grow on me.

I think these big name architects are overrated. Given a proper budget, a local architect could easily design a striking building. My 2 favorite residential towers in Vancouver are designed by local architects.

It's the whole label of Canada design city that is pointless rhetoric and will only insight homerism. Maybe that is your intention.

The biggest names have projects everywhere and have built a brand that doesn't allow for a lot of ingenious new ideas. It's just a trophy to put on your mantle. You're missing out on a whole lot if that is all you consider.

The Western Hemisphere is an awfully big place. Something tells me South America isn't even on your radar which is sad and then there's Europe. We should be doing much better than we do as a nation and that gets lost with unsubstantiated, unconfirmable claims like you just made. It tells you something when local architects are delivering much more amazing designs elsewhere.

There will eventually be three places to go in Vancouver to see Bjarke Ingels' work. The image below is a rendering of what will be.

Great location for the Vancouver proposal. That corner is a dead zone at the moment so this office project should liven things up.

Oh my G, that is dope. Isn't that the BIG/Westbank 'Unzipped' exhibit they've had in Toronto for a while?

Well I mean, when I said Western Hemisphere, I meant western hemisphere (the geographic area), nowhere in Latin America, Western Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Wales, or Western England with a population 2 million or less has what we've been getting here architecturally speaking... at least as far as I've read (I read a lot). But that is beside the point, otherwise you are right.

I definitely go into these grand scales for some reason, I'm not sure why. Maybe in an indirect/unconscious way I am trying to insight homerism? I don't think it's intentional though. I do love Calgary. It's been amazing to me and just as I've grown more as a person than I ever though I could since I moved here, I've definitely witnessed this city change in ways that have inspired me to change my life for the better (starting uni at 25 for urban studies for instance). I've always done the wide-sweeping claim thing on here and it's always pissed off many of you guys, but I have never done it maliciously or with intent to cause anger. And when I respond in any untoward way, I've only ever responded in kind from the disrespectful ways usually used by some to target my posts. It's just how I think, and how I've experienced our country after living in most of our major cities, and there is usually data to back it up, even though at the core my opinions are still only just opinions. Virtually every judgement made on this forum is opinion based. But in the future, I'll try to temper my grandiose claims. Thank you for calling me on it in a respectful way this time.

This reminds me of a cross between two new buildings here:

The latter, which meets the street in a similar fashion to the proposal you mentioned, is a real success in its part of downtown.

Let me start by saying that I believe you came a long way. You are definitely less biased/agressive than you were before and for that, I congratulate you.

However, you do not need to explain why you insist on pushing your grandiose, nitpicked, unwarranted claims on Calgary on everyone here. It's honestly quite annoying.

Everyday, Calgary is a different something. One day it's the first city in the whole world to use wind power to propel it's trains, then it's the city with the tallest skyscraper outside Toronto, then it's the biggest city outside the big three, and then you top it off by saying it's Canada's design city, adding a cherry on top saying it's attracted the most big firms in the Western Hemisphere.

Let me tell you what Calgary is. A rising western city, with a strong economy and average culture, and some interesting architecture. It has witnessed a huge boom because of the oil industry that ruins our country's environment which, yes, left it with a great business community and tall skyscrapers. It's not an international hotbed, not a design city, not an education hub, not a cultural or touristic destination. Not yet anyway. It is amongst the Minneapolises and Austins of this continent, a second-tier major city. Gladly for Calgary, it is doing better than these guys and is establishing itself as a clear leader in that group of cities.

I'm truly happy to see that most Canadian cities, including Calgary, are doing fine in developing their urban realm and transportation networks. I truly am. But I am sick and tired of reading the rubbish you write about Calgary being grandiose, and how much you read about architecture so you would know how truly great it is. Guess what, most of us do.

Maybe people would take you more seriously if you stuck to posting Calgary projects and proposals without the grandiose, empty claims. It's insulting quite frankly... A reality check is in order.
