I don't disagree with that assessment at all. However, I think when people start talking about slavery they need to keep some things in mind:
1. Almost every country practiced slavery.
2. It has been gone now for 8 generations.
3. Historical context is important.
4. European society were the first on Earth to abolish slavery over a large area. The fact that this all happened within about 60 years in the thousands of years of slavery is very interesting. However, instead of being credited for ending slavery, Europeans are bashed(and by extension, the Americas). When in reality the study on why Europeans began to end slavery at the time they did should be taught in every high school. Thats the part of history that should stun people, not the fact that we had slavery, that was to be expected.
5. If our former slaves cannot integrate into society than how did other slave populations do that?
That last part is the one I think we could have some debate over, the other three are pretty set in stone for me. Slavery is the most interesting thing in history for me, people thought they could own someone's life, for life. Its incredibly fascinating and horrific in our modern view.
