I think many people think the project is unfinished because the most high-profile part of the development - the lounge which occupies the ground floor facing both Cambie and 12th - has been in limbo for many many years now. I reemember going to the inagural opening of the very cool lounge in there, and it was closed pretty much as soon as the Canada Line construction began as traffic dropped drastically...so that means the spot has been under tarps since, let's say 2010!

Still seems to be the same owners from the website. Iranian family..

2133 Nanton Avenue & 4189 Yew Street (Arbutus Centre Block C & Block D) - UDP

Quote:
After a Decade of Consultation “Huge Improvements” Speed Arbutus Centre to the Finish Line

2133 Nanton Avenue & 4189 Yew Street (Arbutus Centre Block C & Block D)
When it was first proposed in 1968, the Arbutus Centre was planned to become one of Western Canada’s largest shopping malls. Instead, it drew widespread neighbourhood opposition. Eventually a scaled back version, which has become the community’s centrepiece, was approved, and a leading member of the opposition, Jack Volrich, was elected mayor of Vancouver....

When the panel reviewed these buildings at the rezoning stage in February, they were very divided, with some quite critical. Their advisory opinion, along with community consultation, led city staff to implement a series of conditions as part of the rezoning approval.

The applicant proudly told the panel those have now been met, as the terrace heights have been lowered by over 2 meters, and the east face has been push outwards 1.6 meters to create a base for the buildings. This, along with the removal of some balconies, has reduced shadowing on the public square and in general.

Many panellists felt the building was challenging to review, as it was such a large proposal, while some acknowledged they spent some time studying the review package....

Thanks FF, is there a place online to review the original Arbutus Centre plans and subsequent opposition?

The retail pavilion by the new office building on Great Northern Way is almost complete. It's going to be a Nemesis Coffee store. Source: the changingcitybook blog

The original while not as flashy might have been more practical.

Yeah, the original complements the other buildings around it, while the final product is just "hey, look at me!"

Vancouver does 'fits in well' or compliments it surroundings well, what we don't do much of is 'look at me.' I would not want to see every building like this but like to see a few.

Did this possibly qualify as the project's public art contribution?

Right, but I'd like to emphasize the difference between "having something to say" and "having to say something." Art for art's sake is usually dumb.

I like it because it reminds me of a whimsical building you'd see at an Expo site.

Beautiful structure: definitely a focal point for gatherings in the area.

I'm pretty sure they were planning on installing a few sculptures in the plaza.

Thanks.
The Tapas place needs to open their blinds so people can see what's inside.
Even when they are closed.

Original Joe's at the Rosedale on Robson (former Rosie's) closes its blinds after closing time and anyone walking by would never know its still in business.

More interesting industrial / office architecture. This time it's another building in the Mount Pleasant industrial area. Details on the Changing City blog - (the source of the image).
