That's a front path? That is how it hinders. The one on the right looks like a bomb shelter or a wartime gun turret. I don't know. I sit on my front step and say hi to my neighbours in the evening. There is absolutely no reason for people to be on the street in front of those two houses. Unless they are UPS puzzling if the on the right is actually #55 or not. I can't find a number, or a mailbox, or a door, or is that a path?

Compared to:this one on the same street which actually still interacts with the street.

Side entrance can work, but it usually doesn't fare well on a subdivided lot.

The one on the left while better than the one on the right reads like a light-industrial/commercial tenant pace that sells blinds. I guess to each their own, but yikes those are terrible for me.

Agreed. you can do modern while maintaining some semblance of the surrounding neighbourhood. The previous two examples did not. The one you provided does it much better.

Things evolve. They need to and we need to replace ill repaired housing stock. I'd just like it to be neighborhood sensitive and have a sense of well thought out design.

A couple of examples from Regina:

While it still interacts with the street someone failed composition.

I actually like the entrance, but the rest looks like they were building in Minecraft, although I've seen a lot better things in Minecraft than this.

These two aren't bad, they still stick out, but there's more positive than negative and they compositionally (I know, not a word) sit well. If most of in-fill turned out like this most would be happy.

In the violation of zoning for height category that the city did nothing about is this one. The Tower of Mordor should be bulldozed at the developer's expense and rebuilt in scale to the neighborhood.

I realize my tolerance for deviation from local design norms is probably a lot higher than average, but that one is pushing it even for me

FWIW I like all of those homes, although #2 went way too far with the hardie board, and yeah, the sheer height of #4... I mean, I'd like living in there, but I'm sure you wouldn't make too many friends with the neighbours.

It is pure misanthropy and narcissism that some architect would deliberately blight one of Canada's finest historic residential areas (and the whole area should be designated) with these eyesores to satisfy their own warped ego. Go build your crap in Waverley West or Fort Richmond. Do you think that any of these designs would be approved in Oak Park or the Vieux Carre? Not a chance.

And for goodness sakes, try to get some symmetry happening with the windows and be aware that if these houses are going to be lived in people need some light and fresh air. So yes, that means an adequate amount of windows that actually open. There is one north facing stucco infill in my area that has count 'em, zero windows on the east and west sides. The poor people in there have to turn the lights on even during the early afternoon. What kind of a fool would have designed that? How that was approved I'll never understand.

Hmmmm. I like the one you posted. The house next to it looks like it is ready to be torn down.

A quiet neighbour (read potential criminal), a mentally ill person who "hates" the world. Someone making porno pictures and develops their own film.

Me, I like my light and have Winter depression, so I need that light whenever I can get some.

Lots of homes don't have windows on their sides, and still get plenty of light. Especially homes on narrow lots in older neighbourhoods. I wonder how people living in townhouses, or god forbid, apartments, survive in such conditions!

In my first apt. at 87 Smith, I had windows in 3 places: B'drm/Dining Room, Living Room, Bathroom.

In my second apt. the suite faced west at 59 Donald St. (Million dollar view of the Golden Boy). My b'drm window faced north so I saw Broadview Manor out that window. The bathroom had no window, which made it excellent for "phasing" to see the spiritual realms.

^I thought this was just a replacement on the storm sewer lift station outflow to the river? They do this work in the winter months when the river is frozen.

Ya whatever it is. Some kind of sewer related work. And yes winter is best as the water is low and frozen. Makes things much easier. Also there will be no rain storms, so the pumps/outfall will not be used. Which make things difficult in the summer if you're mid project and there's a major storm.
