Quite possibly the best aerials of Vancouver/Burnaby/New West I've ever seen.

From an Ottawa forumer. With major renovations coming to Centre Block, this is as good of a picture we'll get for the next 10+ years.

In January, the House of Commons in moving to the West Block, on the centre, left. We can sort of see the temporary House's snow covered glass dome. On the lower, left, we see old Union Station, which will be home to the Senate for the next 10+ years.

They've just completed a 1 billion dollar renovation to the West Block, which includes the temporary House of Commons built in what was previously a courtyard.

Old Union went through 200+ million dollar restoration for the Senate. They added a small extension to the east (stone and glass, visible next to the stairs going under a roadway). This was done in order to remove a blank wall that's been there since a previous building was demolished in the 50s. Senate sittings will for the first time in history, be televised in this new space.

Winnipeg has just about the widest, grandest downtown street in the country, doesn't it? Yet another exhibit in the case for it being the most American-looking city in Canada by far.

Do you really find it winder and grander than the likes of University, Rene Levesque, and W. Georgia? Maybe relative to the city size I suppose...

Well, the difference to me is that Portage Avenue is a commercial street in the same way that Michigan Avenue is in Chicago. University and Rene-Levesque are wide, but they're not destinations or central to how people in Toronto and Montreal understand or think about their cities.

Granted, Portage is pretty shabby-looking and long past its heyday, but you still see a broadness of intent when it was laid out and built upon that is unlike anywhere else in Canada.
