Read somewhere yesterday that the GMB report is coming out next week, and Horrigan specifically said "we are looking to plan a solution in 2019".

So to paraphrase: "We are planning to start planning... in the future." Anyone want to take make a guess what will be first, Uber or GMB?

Yeah, I wonder how many hundreds of millions / billions are going to be pissed away for an option that will offer a minimal temporary relief?

Let’s place bets on the options:

Simply upgrading then existing tunnel with no new lanes / capacity I give a 95% chance of being on the list.

Adding a new 2 lane tunnel with bike / pedestrian access, 85% chance.

Adding a new 4 lane tunnel with rapid bus but minimal interchange improvements, 60% chance.

A weird odd lane system (7 lanes?) that still uses a terrible counter flow system (at the expense of a streamlined rapid bus system), 60% chance.

After this we actually enter half decent solutions.

Completely new 6 lane tunnel or bridge that can be expanded to 8 lanes in the future with rebuilt interchanges and rapid bus capability, 50% chance.

A new 8 lane bridge (upon opening day) with a rapid bus system and re-built interchanges (which is the ideal solution) 20% chance

An entirely new route, 5% chance.

The original project, 0.00001% chance.

It’ll probably be the most anticlimactic “option” the NDP will pick.

Yea I'm gonna put my money on 'there are challenges with all of the options studied thus far' and 'subject to future study'

Similar to the ride-hailing announcement, I think it's gonna be pretty underwhelming.

This was only a review of the government's work on the project "up to this point." They never expanded the scope (e.g., impact on Oak St Bridge, etc.)

The mayors were against this project because it was never connected to any of the planning done regionally, and Andrew Weaver has even said there needs to be a much more comprehensive transportation strategy for this part of the region, which this project would only be 1 piece of.

I could easily see recommendations for a broader South of Fraser transportation plan (including Richmond, excluding Langley), which would be used as a precursor for the Mayors' next 10 year plan? (Perhaps a little similar to INSTPP on the North Shore)

(and yes, even though this is a provincial highway)

I was against the referendum idea myself, but if the NDP build as many highway / bridge projects in Metro-Vancouver as the supposed anti-transit Liberals built transit projects during their leadership (The Canada Line at 2 billion, the Evergreen Line at 1.4 billion, the Expo Line upgrades (including Metrotown, Main Street and Commercial / Broadway Stations) which I believe is around a 1 billion dollar program, and phase one of the ten year plan at 700 million) then I will be happy.

So, a stalling tactic for a good decade or two?

Seemed pretty complete to me, upgraded an existing highway to modern standards, replaced an aging under-built structure that excludes bikes, pedestrians, and dangerous goods and included rapid bus services connecting White Rock / the ferries, Delta, Steveston and Skytrain (with direct ramps between Bridgeport Station and the highway).

What more is there really to look at without wasting decades?

Is this going to become like a high speed rail project in Canada? Study after study after study and no action?

Traffic simulations were done on the impacts of the Oak Street Bridge and Knight Street Bridge. Do you really think that the NDP with the Greens are going to expand this project to include replacing one of those structures as well?????

What did I just see, a pig fly?

I just have a hard time seeing this project move forward under the current government.

The provincial budget for the next few years (I think until 2021?) never forecasted spending any money on this project, and the money that was previously allocated, was largely shifted to the pattullo.

The majority of users for this crossing are from Liberal-held ridings too. I think if the government found $3B to spend, they would rather use that for something like childcare, than this project.

Hopefully I’m wrong, but we’ll see what they announce in a few minutes

Welp, the report says they need another report to study the options.

Can't make this up people.

Usually I don't drink before noon, but at this rate the NDP will have me in the drunk tank before Christmas.

Are you fucking kidding me?? A shorter bridge? What does that even mean?? So instead of making the approach/descent of the bridge deck more gradual, they want to make it steeper? Great. I see they’re already prepping for the BC value engineering
