Also, the 1913 recession ended Winnipeg's run at the head of Canada's tall building pack, and I don't think we're about to catch up any time soon. But that bothers me about as much as a resident of Austin or Nashville is bothered their respective city doesn't have any buildings taller than 200 metres. That is to say, not at all.

Continuing to see smaller/shorter projects that redevelop underbuilt sites (apartments going up on Roslyn Rd behind Safeway) or giant historic craters (True North Square) is just fine with me. You might not be able to see this change while driving into Winnipeg on McPhillips, or even from the postcard spot on Tache, but you sure can see it when you're walking around the city.

It was mentioned it may be for the slip form type system they will be suing for the rest of the core. Keeps everything aligned properly. Not sure if slip form is the right term. Jack form was mentioned. I think slip form is a continuous pour like a grain elevator. Where as this will be raised floor by floor.

Here's an image I marked up with my interpretation of where the tower will actually sit. The south side on the other end of the core will be one gridline outwards, like the north side.

I'm second guessing if it should go out a bit further along the main st side. This is only for the tower of course. The podium with the restaurant will go right out to the sidewalk.

Probably a temporary roof for concrete pours. Gotta keep it warm for a week before you can start working on top of it.

From what I can find on the internet it was designed to look that way. It was also a depression era fed govt jobs project so that may also explain why it looks that way.

Makes a design statement but not too expensive to build.

That top part used to be the residence for the workers who kept the furnaces going with coal. No idea what's up there now, would probably make a killer boardroom. Apparently the inside is stunning, and a lot of restoration happened about 5 years ago. A shame no one really ever get to see it that doesn't work there. Hopefully as that strip gets busier, more people check it out.

Yes, the site was right next to the old train station and the Manitoba Hotel was the first grand railway hotel on the Prairies. When it burned down, the ruins were left standing there for years. I’m not sure why. Then, finally, the Industrial Exposition Building went up, which was sort of like the Convention Centre of its day. I would think that the Civic Auditorium, which was another make-work project from the Depression (now the Provincial Archives Building), eliminated the need for the Industrial Exposition Building.

Yeah but the ceilings are only six feet high in 55 Nassau!

I was only there once, when I was about 12. The ceilings seemed adequate but I suppose it was before my growth spurt. That was in the 1970s and I’ve still never been in a higher residential apartment, that I can recollect. It was on the 37th floor.
