I wish I could fast forward a year. I'm just speculating, but to recap for Midtown:

Projects that are for sure happening: Norfolk Southern, Anthem, 712 West Peachtree (Portman's third tower)

Projects that should start soon: 1105, Midtown Union, Cousin's 8th st tower, 903 Peachtree apartments

Projects we haven't heard anything about in a while: 1125 Peachtree, the SLS hotel and 1138 Peachtree

Projects that are still very iffy if not dead: (n)Opus II

I walk past the site several times a week and haven't seen any movement. I'm pretty sure the SunTrust is still operating in the old First Landmark Bank building. Also, Anthem is over half a dozen floors out of the ground, so it's way past "for sure happening" re: the previous post.

Lackluster and completely uninspired, IMO. If i were City Council I'd look to block this until they update their renderings and active uses. Looks like a strip mall and chikfila designed by Fuqua or a poor man's version of the battery, avalon, or even the new Forsyth county development (second image below).

I do like the new platform/infill between the stadiums and idea of new retail at this location, however.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this was poorly done. I think it would be better to have something that facilitates large crowds gathering around (considering it's right outside the stadium, and perfect for tailgating).

I think they might be limited to how much they can physically build on top of the existing parking structures that exist there, from a weight perspective. They also want to preserve sight lines of the stadium and arena and also maintain the area as an open concept park- so filling in the area with urban style development might take away from the overall open area they are trying to maintain. They also need to be mindful that large crowds will accumulate in this area and they will host events in the green space area. I'm glad they are filling in the gap in the area fronting Olympic Park drive and working to improve the aesthetic of the area. City Council has no legal authority over GWCC Authority land. They are State entity.

I wasn't trying to advocate for a dense, urban development. I would prefer to see it remain a park, but with a few places that are more outward facing. Instead several of us all see this as a fast food like building. See my post above for a link for an outdoor food/beer stand. Sprinkle a few of those around, and you can have a great area for socializing before/after games and maybe even watch parties for during the games if they can come up with a location for a giant projector.

I just want to see an open community oriented tailgating park area, rather than a fast food establishment or a tiny bar.

I assume this is going to be similar to the Battery for the Falcons and Hawks before the Gulch gets redeveloped. I picture bars and restaurants, and eventually concerts on the lawn with that screen. That screen could also be utilized to watch Atlanta sports. Hopefully it works out like that and not a fast food hall.

Lost in the discussion of the retail development by GWCC is the reworking of Andrew Young International Boulevard. Looks like the lanes closest to GWCC are incorporated into a new plaza that tucks up under a new awning of some sort. The current east bound lanes near GWCC turn into westbound only. (Its unclear where they transition.) Those two lanes then become the only lanes of traffic going southbound by MBS. There is one lane going northbound by MBS but only to what looks like a new entry into the underground garage. Its hard to tell whether that lane goes under the retail development and reappears into the back end of the bus lot, or if that is some other outlet for the buses.

The road closest to State Farm arena becomes the major flow of traffic northbound and likely enables you to turn right onto eastbound Andrew Young Int.

Edit. Looking back at the Madness is Coming rendering the road near State Farm is a left turn only so it becomes a circular. Not sure if there is any traffic left on Andrew Young International from Marietta to this area. Are they making that pedestrian only?

Overall, having gone to several events in the area I think the realignment/road diet is a good thing for the area. It will be interesting to see whether they close some of these off during large events or whether the road next to MBS will still be necessary as an outlet for that parking garage. Currently, during large events at MBS they park large equipment across the roads, add temporary jersey barriers, etc... I'd hope that this reworking of the roads is more permanent solution to handle large events.

I don't know that using the cap over the railroad to add a bus parking lot is a great use of that space. Would like to see the buses parked somewhere underneath or in the back lots behind GWCC. However, buses are always going to be in that area to drop off and pick up so having a lot where they all go and stay out of traffic as people load and unload is probably what GWCC is thinking.
