Dufferin Mall is being redeveloped in phases, starting with the north parking lot where the Taco Bell etc is located.

Damn....I was hoping it wouldn't be...and if it were to be, at least be done with dense, but midrise elements. I don't see how the density proposed before is justified (perhaps for the pitiful supply vs demand argument). It's more intensive on infrastructure, and doesn't provide a great transition to the surrounding neighbourhood from what the previous iteration showed.

So 95% of this Art Deco building will end up at the city dump or are they actually restoring the building?

I think there has been some pretty damaging "updates" made to the building over the last couple decades, so I'm not sure how much of the interior deco stuff still exists :/ The exterior stuff will be restored it looks like, and the new glass should be a major improvement over what is there currently.

Whoa, what!

Any more info yet? Or is it just part of this redevelopment just to the north of the mall?

The Calgary BMO Convention Centre Expansion project dropped this morning A major component in the revitalization and connectivity projects underway at Stampede Park, this will double the size of the BMO Convention Centre, bringing it up to a tier 1 convention facility. The project will cost around $500 million, and is likely to start construction next year as the first major component of the overall Calgary Entertainment District Development in East Victoria Park that is being overseen by CMLC, the same organization behind the ongoing successful revitalization of the East Village.

The Arena will be going right next door actually. Will be quite a sight to see! We should be expecting an arena deal within the next year.

Yeah man, I look forward to seeing a full suite of renders over the coming days, and will be sure to post them here. From the Global News Article cited, it sounds like the convention centre is also looking for a hotel to set up shop nearby. I know the Stampede has been trying to get one ever since the ClubSport deal fell through a few years ago. Perhaps this and the arena will be a catalyst for that. Currently the only hotel in East Victoria Park is Hotel Arts. However, the Alt and Hiltons in the EV are quite close.

I actually really love that development. Why couldn't this have been built downtown instead of hideous — like Success, Pinnacle or Infinity.

Well, we'll see how well it really turns out - the massing models give a bit less utopian of an image of what it would look like than the artist's impressions do.

The real reason for that though, is that — like Pinnacle and Cityplace was happening at the start of the condo boom 15 years ago. Land values were much lower, and sophistication of design was not where it is now. Stuff that's proposed downtown today tends to be a lot better than the early/mid-00s towers (though there still exists a fair bit of variation in quality between profit-maximizing investor garbage, luxury stuff, creative infill, and good city-building projects).

So looks like this 60 story tower (next to the Butterfly) is back on the books again for downtown Vancouver.

Not sure if there has been any significant design changes or not.

That's not entirely true. The first phases in the Cityplace are the better phases architecturally. It's only the last few phases that have gone to — and those have sold at the highest square footage. Their margins on Canada House should out of this world since the block cost them maybe a million dollars 25 years ago.

I'm not too impressed by the Bloor Dufferin proposal. Leaving aside how grossly out of place it is in the context of this neighbourhood, I still find it far too dense to create the intimacy and human scale presented in the renderings. It's Mirvish Village on steroids.

The owners of Dufferin Mall are exploring options of developing the parking lot. I wouldn't take it too seriously at this stage.
