Some new renders of the revitalization and residential repurposing of Calgary's largest surviving historic office tower and the only major example of Art Deco left in Alberta, the Barron Building.

"the only major example of Art Deco left in Alberta"

Say "hello" to Edmonton's federal building.

Oh, is that considered art deco? I don't really see it. But if it is, I apologize.

If you click on the link and view a larger version of the image you will notice the art deco design elements on the building.

Here is another one on Whyte Ave.

You can see it, especially along the top with the decorative elements.

Although it almost feels like a transitional tower. Almost some brutalist feeling elements to it.

That second one has some streamline elements to it.

Guess I wasn't thinking. Is the Garneau historic? I feel like that is more of a recent build (past 30/40 years). Either way, I wouldn't consider it major (100 000 + sq ft.) but the Federal Building most definitely is. It's funny, I've photographed that building a ton of times but never noticed the art deco elements.

The Baron is Streamline too.

The Federal Building has strong Deco elements from the peak era as that's when it was designed but, there are also subtle elements that reveal it as being built 30 years later.

Looks like 1950s "delayed Deco" to me. Like BNS at King and Bay.

The Garneau was built in 1948 (originally a hospital... St. Joseph's?), reno'd in the 90s.

If you get into the elevator lobby on the Fed building you get to see the highlights of the Art Deco style. I am going to go through my photo archive and see what I have. As demo for the renovations started, I got a chance to get in there and take some photos.

The original design started in the 40s but delays happened and it was not until the late 50s that work began. My father was involved during construction as a Mech designer.

Apparently the NFLD coat of arms was not present in the design as it was not part of Canada when it was designed. The Architect contacted Joey Smallwood and they had a design sent out just in time.

My sister in law now works on the top floor and I have had a chance to go in. The place looks great.

two comments
- I wish they had kept the ground floor black granite
- I see the plans to demolish the adjacent bank appear to now be plans to retain it as a restaurant.

Going to steal the "delayed Deco" term - they are some of my favourite buildings.

I'm not sure the exact reason, but the modernist Macdonald Block provincial government complex built in the 60s/70s has some interesting almost Deco features. Particularly the overhangs at ground level and interior features on the first two floors. Sleek marble, gold and straight lines. Maybe to have some coherence with the attached Whitney Block? Which incidentally will likely be the prettiest building I have ever worked in.

You can kind of see what I'm talking about here: https://goo.gl/maps/LowzhWvjEUN2

So excited to see this finally get repurposed. Also glad that it won't have that ugly office addition that they were planning.
