Last week, the first of our new 40-foot hybrid buses, built by Nova Bus, went into service on route 25 UBC/Brentwood Station!

The buses have a diesel-electric hybrid drive system, which means they’ll have the lowest greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption in our fleet (aside from our electric trolleybuses).

They also feature air conditioning and engines that stop at idle, as well as factory-installed protection barriers for operators — a standard feature on all new buses.

The bus is the first of 104 new buses that will go into service at Vancouver Transit Centre. As the buses go through the proper testing, we’ll be adding them to the fleet.

Coast Mountain Bus Company is also expecting 23 new 40-foot Nova highway coaches, which are currently undergoing pre-delivery inspections. These buses will go into service at Richmond Transit Centre.

Are these in operation elsewhere in the system? I'm pretty sure Surrey just got a bunch of swanky new buses. The 501 definitely has driver barriers now.

They did mention the 23 Nova Suburbans that will replace the worst condition Orion 5s in Richmond.

Did you all see this? I definitely support enclosing drivers in a security cage/plastic barrier after seeing it.

i am aware that they need them.

i find it disappointing that as a society we have come to the point of needing them.

Totally agreed. But we have drug problems, mental problems, and people who are just dumb so we need to be practical.

Just like how we now have secure bulletproof cockpit doors on planes. We need to advance with the times.

Compass Cards are DESFire EV1 cards secured by secret keys. The card data can't be changed by the user unless there's an exploit, and if there were then that would be big news everywhere.

Compass Tickets are Ultralight cards secured by a message authentication code on each record. One cannot arbitrarily change the data on a ticket.

Transit riders who didn't manage to snag one of TransLink's new Compass Wristbands Monday morning will probably have to wait until February to get one – unless they're willing to shell out money to a scalper.

Just a few hours after TransLink sold out its first batch of the wearable fare bracelets, a number of people started advertising the "super limited" items on Craigslist.

But while TransLink only charged a $6 refundable deposit for the sought-after Compass Wristbands, one Craigslist seller demanded 10 times that much. Another asked potential buyers to send in their "best offer."

Only 1,000 blue adult wristbands and 1,000 orange concession wristbands were made available Monday, which is not a lot considering there are about 500,000 riders who use the system daily. The transit provider estimates it will take about two months to get more from the manufacturer in Germany.

If they do, it goes to show that even with low wages and high housing costs, some folks still have way too much money on their hands.

Translink open board meeting today. Sound was pretty low for the first half (before they took a break) so there was a lot I missed. A couple tidbits thought: they are going to look into adding washrooms to the system, and they aren't going to expand their current pets on transit rules.

With compass cards can you have several of them and they all have a shared balance or do they each have their own balance?

So like when you get a collector version and use it do you have to transfer to that new card or do you log on to something and that balance is applicable on the new card as well?

So with these wristbands if you have a card but forget the wrist band one day cn you use the card?

Each Compass card has a discreet card number, so each card holds a separate balance and needs to be loaded separately.
I would expect the wristband to be the same.
