The old j crew is what David Locke, radio voice of the jazz said a few weeks ago on his podcast. The store sponsors his podcast.

I’m having trouble imagining where that would be. Where does campus and end research park even start? It seems like foothill and mario capecchi where the madsen clinic is would make the most sense but it’s still confusing

It's on the main campus between the Huntsman Center and the Rec Center. Click on the link and go to about the 5th image, which shows its location on campus.

I agree.

I can’t get the building salt lake site to loads any more. I just get a loading bar forever. :/

Abercrombie and Fitch is on the SE corner. It seems like I heard they were going to close that location a while back ago though.

I don’t think we will ever see a Walmart in downtown Salt Lake. Smith’s marketplace is currently undergoing a major renovation though. They shrunk the electronics department and moved all of the kitchen stuff upstairs. The layout of the first floor is been transformed pretty dramatically. They got rid of the linoleum tile floors and are going with stain concrete. I have a feeling that they’re going to half 🞵🞵🞵 the renovation and not do anything about the elivators or ceiling. The elevator are an atrocity. The ceiling and lighting are also really outdated. White acoustic ceiling titles, fluorescent lighting..,, ikky. Hopefully they went and looked at Harmon’s before they started the renovation. I doubt it though.

I bet a Walmart will eventually be built where is Sutherlands is a North Temple one that plays in evitable he goes out of business.

I hope not. No more Wal-Marts in Salt Lake please! Although I wouldn't mind one of those urban mini-Targets that's been popping up around city centers, as long as the 300 West Target closes (which seems unlikely to happen anytime soon).

Even with the 3rd West store, being it is so far south and not on a heavy transit line, I could see 1 or 2 happen further north as the City population increases.

The first I could see around 1st or 2nd south and 3rd/4th east. Topped with 4 or 5 stories of apartments, it would fit in the area quite nicely. The second would work at any of the 4 corners of North Temple and Redwood intersection. It could be topped with 4 stories of apartments.

While I was definitely joking about wanting a WalMart or check cashing places, as a general rule I am less dogmatic about whether a store is a big box retailer, national chain or local business as long as it conforms to the form expected in an urban environment.

Here are some examples of national retailers, that if they built like this downtown, I would be fine to have them around. I do prefer local for food because it differentiates us from Anytown USA, but I am far more concerned about form and function.

Boston Target

Georgia Wal-Mart

Home Depot Vancouver BC (Source: Google Streetview)

Wendy's Vancouver BC (Source: Google Streetview) (*This even has a drive through around the back that shows you can balance to some degree the demands of car centric food establishments with urban needs.)

The 3rd West Target is very close to the 13th South TRAX stop. Salt Lake City should look into transit station area zoning like they have running down 400 South and North Temple, or form-based zoning like around the 900 South station. This would ensure that any development around the 1300 South TRAX station could be true transit-oriented, mixed-use development, and could lend itself much better to smart development.

And if they expand it to encompass the big box stores that already exist, it would ensure that if those big box stores ever want to rebuild, they would have to basically completely change their stores. Imagine a smaller Target up to the 300 West street level, and how much that would do for walkability in that area. The 1300 South TRAX stop is really the only TRAX station in Salt Lake City that doesn't sit in a smart development-based zoning area (if you don't count the U of U stations and the airport one) and it shows in how lacking it seems compared to other TRAX stations.

Target has shown a willingness to build small stores in urban areas. In fact, if you look at recently-opened stores and stores planning to open soon, they've moved almost entirely away from the 100,000+ square foot suburban format. Only 2 of their stores listed as coming soon fit that - many of them are in the 20,000-40,000 square foot range. I would imagine something a little bit bigger if they ever rebuilt 300 West - maybe 60,000-70,000 square feet, but hopefully no bigger than that.

I think somewhere along 400 South is probably where something like this would fit best. You could incorporate an urban Target into one of the massive new apartment complexes that's going up there quite easily. Unless your argument would be that it would be too close to the Smith's Marketplace.

It appears Wing Coop will be opening a location in one of the weird retail spaces at 300 W 600 N. I understand this is very minor news but I love wings so felt the need to announce it hehe.

While I'm talking about restaurants, many of the retail spaces on Regent Street remain vacant but I can't imagine that will be true for long. I'm not sure how Fireside is doing but Last Course and Pretty Bird seem to be doing very well. Three more restaurants in the pipeline for Regent Street are Pastries n Chaat (have another location in Draper), Maize, and Honest Eatery.

Mini target

Provo just got a mini-Target down the street from BYU, despite a larger one being in Orem. Getting one at the gateway would be a god-send.
