Not this again. I think it would be news to them that they received hundreds of millions.
I agree that the land should have been made available for free as an in-kind contribution (potentially with some sort of return based on the profitability of the project). The clean-up should be on the public dime, and the public realm amenities as well. Incremental tax financing could be looked at. There in no doubt that this is a public amenity that benefits the city, so the investment is justified. To rely entirely on private parties to create a showcase neighbourhood is not realistic.
My main concern is that Melnyk decides to retrench in Kanata and ride things out, which could lead to the demise of the team. The team will never be more valuable and attractive to buyers than it is right now with these development rights.
