From the site: The Pumpkin Building would wear many hats throughout its existence. It started out as at least two nightclubs in the 1920's (Pumpkin Palace and Studio Club), later a church called Valley Gospel, an inn called the Pumpkin Inn, a real estate office called Stan Summeril Real Estate, and later a hardware store (Magnolia Park Hardware).

Thanks for the memories! I grew up around the corner from the Pumpkin when it was a hardware store. We lived on Chandler when it was still a gravel road (I remember the day they paved it with asphalt) and the old steam trains operated adjacent to Chandler.

I was watching the Spade Cooley show on TV one afternoon, when my grandfather walked me up to the Pumpkin to buy me some rope to teach me how to make a lariat. Albin's Drugs was on the corner where Porto's is today and Albin's Hobbies and Toys was where the Train Shack is now. I recall when they opened the California Theatre and when they closed the Magnolia Theatre, both on Magnolia Boulevard.

Does anyone know where silent film star Louise Brooks lived?

I came across several photographs of her- that were taken at her home, and in her backyard, in 1925.


I'll start with this one. (they get more interesting as I go along) note the wrought iron lamp

I find the next two photos especially intriguing becase of the ornamental 'garden', that was constructed around a small group of trees in her backyard.
I don't believe I have ever seen anything quite like it.

It's almost like a little stage.

If you ask me (and you didn't), the poor trees seem a bit confined. I wonder if something like this is detrimental to the trees? (Yoo Hoo, odinthor)

If we're able to figure out where she lived [at least in 1925], I thought it'd be fun to to snoop around the property [via google_earth] and see if this strange garden feature is still intact.

Although the date for the listing is later, it's in the right vicinity for the first horse drawn street railway.

"On July 1, 1874, the modest, horse-drawn cars of the Spring and Sixth Street Railroad became the first streetcars to roll down Los Angeles streets. Founded by lawyer Robert M. Widney, the Spring & Sixth operated a regular schedule, running cars hourly on weekdays between 6:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. For a ten-cent fare, passengers could ride the one-and-a-half-mile route from the intersection of Temple and Spring south to Sixth, and then west to Figueroa."

By 1887-88 he has become a judge, the president of the University Bank of Los Angeles, and a real estate dealer living at 310 S. Olive Street.

There are quite a few more Widneys listed in the 1894 L.A. Directory.

R. M. is still the president of the bank, but has moved to 416 S. Olive St.



I didn't find any indication that he owned a street car 'railroad'. I'll keep looking.

A google search led me to the "Louise Brooks Society" blog which says Louise Brooks lived in Helen Twelvetrees old Laurel Canyon home. It didn't provide an address anywhere, though. But there are many photos of Louise around the property with current photos of the inside and outside. It also identifies the photos as from 1927, not 1925. The trees may or may not be the same ones, but the "stone throne" is no more.

More googling led me to an undated page for a property in Laurel Canyon named "Twelvetrees", also without an address. It appears to be the same place judging by the staircase photo within. It has been painted but appears to be the same one. This property page says they restored the home, and the photos appear to be quite a few years old.

Just to back up what Lomara wrote...the photos must be from 1927 or later. Louise Brooks' whereabouts in 1925/1926 are discussed in her book Lulu in Hollywood. She was in New York City then, and it wasn't until 1927 that she moved to Hollywood.

And then I found Movieland directory that says at one time Louise lived at 366 Laurel Canyon. If you read the Louise Brooks Society blog entries, it mentions the street was renumbered. If we dig up older maps maybe the renumbered address can be found.

While checking real estate sites, I'm seeing the property with the address 1881 Laurel Canyon as well as 8100 Gould. However, each real estate site I check has varying details on build date and number of bedrooms. I wonder what state the public records are in. One has last sold 1990, one shows last sold 2005.

I also wondered about the other site allegedly owned by Helen Twelvetrees. Redfin puts it at 8125 Gould with a build date of 1959. She passed in 1958, so maybe this is on the right location but was torn down and rebuilt?
