They probably locked one of the bathroom doors when the other room was sold with private bath. There seem to be two bathrooms and two toilets opening onto the hallway only that were probably available for occupants of rooms without baths.

Wow, I love the tire tower; went up in 1928 and was demolished in 1960. It's by Armand Monaco, who is mostly known for Italiante Villas like this one, but this Deco tower reminds one of Monaco's early version of the People's National Bank on Hill St (later designed in a different version by Walker & Eisen).

Evidently, BRR's post concerned not one, but two separate purveyors of wine and beer, Colvin's and The Wine Barrel, "No1." It appears that there may have been as many as ten "Wine Barrel" stores, including 7161 Beverly Blvd. :previous" A quick browse of the '35 CD indicates listings for 8503 S. Vermont and 4301 W Pico. Other possible locations include 4418 S Central, 7529 Sunset Blvd., and 416 W 4th Street, Santa Ana.

In 1925, 7529 Sunset was a location for a Van De Kamp bakery. It later became an inexpensive "variety" store until the repeal of prohibition when the alcohol started to flow. At some point the location housed a drug store, a furniture store, a photo store and currently purveys of spiritual art objects. Next door is pizza and . . . beer and wine (Cheebos) Without referring to the permits, unless the current structure was rebuilt, it certainly look like the original structure has had a haircut or two, over the intervening years.

At some point it was called The Studio Club.
Not sure I'd want to tangle with that one owner.

From the site: The Pumpkin Building would wear many hats throughout its existence. It started out as at least two nightclubs in the 1920's (Pumpkin Palace and Studio Club), later a church called Valley Gospel, an inn called the Pumpkin Inn, a real estate office called Stan Summeril Real Estate, and later a hardware store (Magnolia Park Hardware).

Thanks for finding that info Beaudry! Since the motel was there until 1994, I must have seen it, but have no recollection of it.



In its 45 years there was more than one owner. This particular incarnation of the place
(above postcard) used the Orange address as stated on the back:

What caught my eye is the large, and impressive, house on the hill.

The description on the cabinet card is rather vague...
"Lincoln Heights near L.A. High School."

It's really quite unique; especially the mansard-like roof in the back.

& I just noticed the mane(s)...are there two horses? If so, are they BOTH in the cart..or just one?

I think I may know where the house was...here's a 1927 aerial view of the area west of Lincoln High.

There is a large house in the circle that has elements that match ER's photo, however looking at the 1921 Baist map of the area shows no house:

Now ER's photo is older than 1921 and there's a house, the aerial is 1927 and it shows a house with similar features. Here's the current view from Google Maps:

I believe the photo was taken at Broadway and Gates looking at the house on the hill to the northeast. But the Baist Survey only shows small houses...my brain hurts.

Here's a closer-look.

If I'm interpreting the information on that photo at oldhomesoflosangeles correctly, the house was built by the Baron and Baroness Rogniat, and it burned in 1894.

William Woolwine then built a home on the property, before the original Lincoln HS campus subsequently was built on the site, now the NE corner of North Broadway
and Lincoln Park Avenue.
