Does anyone actually like those dark "void" ceilings?

They seem kind of oppressive to me.

They remind me of those Star Trek soundstage scenes without any backdrops:

Haha! good point!! They do make the merchandise and fixtures pop, however.

Agreed! Definitely see where you're coming from, but I do think its appropriate for a book store in this instance.

Not always properly utilised though, no doubt about that.

Yeah, keep digging Vin. Nice try, but the Bay at the Eaton Centre has always been known as the Bay at the Eaton Centre. The building it is in was reconfigured a couple of years ago to contain both the Bay (with a smaller footprint) and now Saks Fifth Avenue. Two separate entities under one roof, with divided primary entrances. They both feature famous Christmas window displays every year which draw crowds (Mariah Carey officially "opened" them two years ago for example). Got all that?

No this is a new thing, since CF bought the Simpsons tower and the store from HBC a few years ago, merged it into Eaton Centre and convinced them to open Sak's at the site (instead of taking over the Bloor st. Bay).

A few years is not a "new thing", and as a Toronto resident I can assure you it's colloquially been known as the Bay at the Eaton Centre for ages to everyone here. We're getting off topic though, let's focus on the retail happenings in Vancouver - just not the beat to death topic of downtown malls that aren't going to happen anytime soon.

Montreal-based jewellery retailer Birks is expanding its presence in Vancouver this fall with the unveiling of two luxurious jewellery and watch brands. An official boutique for UK-based diamond retailer Graff will open on West Georgia Street, and Swiss luxury watch retailer Patek Philippe will open next to it. Both are set to open towards the end of November, and both will have separate street-facing entrances.

That's a whole new angle of a shot of Metrotown and Metropolis. Nice shot Kazu. They better leave the mall alone: it's an anchor of Metrotown itself. Without the mall, Metrotown would never grow to what it is today.

US Walmart is building 'town centers' in its parking lots

In other words, certain Walmarts might start to resemble open-air malls more than standalone big-box stores, surrounded by chains like Shake Shack, Chipotle, and Orangetheory Fitness.

"We envision a more robust and dynamic shopping experience that combines entertainment venues, curated local food vendors, health and fitness services as well as recreational opportunities in a way that connects and engages with the community," a Walmart spokesperson told Business Insider.
