So $260/month for parking and say $35/week for gas to give a nice round figure of $400 per month, and that figure for gas is probably a lowball estimate. That's $300/month more than a bus pass. Annualize that and we're talking $3,600, quite a lot of money for the average person. And unless one is living outside of the city, peak hour service along the mainline routes is generally quite good, often as quick as driving once consideration is made for getting in and out of the parkade.
So why do people do it? I know a lady who lives a two minute walk from a mainline bus route, and within an eight minute walk of three others, all of which would drop her off within a 60 second walk of her work, but she drives nonetheless. All things considered it takes longer as sometimes there's a wait to get in and out of the parkade. When asked why she doesn't use the bus she answered because it's inconvenient. How much more convenient can it be?
Public transit has a serious image problem in Winnipeg, certainly much more so than in other cities which have rail-based systems. This won't change with a bus based system whether it runs on dedicated roadways or not. A start could be made with cleaner buses and properly heated and clean shelters. I walked by the shelter at northbound Osborne ar River the other day and it was vile, strewn with litter and reeking of piss. Get with it Winnipeg Transit.
