Cidex.. absolutely love it, perfect for that area. Every time I've driven by this parking lot I always thought what a prime spot for redevelopment.

I love how they are not touching the existing building either. It is such a nice little brick building that has been left unused because of its surroundings.

Can you elaborate? What surroundings make the building unusable and how would the proposed project change that? Honestly curious to know more.

It is a small little brick building with a rooftop terrace that screams little boutique eatery to me.

It is sitting on a massive gravel parking lot, and behind an uninviting, non-pedestrian friendly building housing a bank. Across the street is another parking lot with a little strip mall with stores that basically grab and go type places.

It is extremely uninviting right now as it stands. The proposed development brings storefront with it right on the exact street. It is going to liven up the place and make it another destination off of Whyte, just like the area North of Whyte where Crawford building is now.

I think you're looking at the wrong building, which is indicated as "abutting existing building" on the site plans.

I mean the "podium" on the NE portion of the development site.

As it is, there's waaaaaay too much retail properties in the area as it is. I'd support this project being 100% multi-res. Not every site need be mixed-use. Heck, even ULI admits that now.

??? You referenced my comment that was actually about the "abutting existing building", I wasn't talking about the proposed "podium" building on the NE corner.

In regards to the NE corner, I don't mind it. It's going to face an alley, I think it will fit in well with its street presence. Not every site needs mixed-use, but when it's practically adjacent to Whyte means it is viable and that is fine with me. I would love to see more stand-alone towers in the area, but at least two blocks North or South of the Ave IMO.

If you were in Vancouver I would understand the complaint, but not in Edmonton. Density is BY FAR AND AWAY the number 1 priority for Edmonton.

There is a reason for this design. You can't demand 800k 1 bedroom units like you can in Vancouver, which means you can't have buildings like the Vancouver House, Barclay Village, The Butterfly etc... Even there most buildings are square/rectangle glass boxes. They obviously cost less than funky designs.

In any case, glass boxes are much more sharp looking than funky towers. Personally, given the choice, I would buy in Shangri-La over the Trump Tower that's across the street and much newer. Think Aston Martin vs. Audi. Both are beautiful, but the round design language of Audi is much less pleasing to the eye than Aston's sharper designs filled with straight lines. Think db9 vs the equivalent generation A8. No competition.

But again, this is all irrelevant. Edmonton needs density and modern towers. For at least 2-3 decades you can't complain. AT ALL. As long as the tower is modern, there is nothing to moan about.

Symphony Tower u/c is pretty darn nice IMO, and something like that, taller, would be amazing because it's not a f*ckin box.

I agree with you regarding some variety in shapes, if I’m also thrilled if the boxes we get keep on improving like we’ve seen... I think we’ve come a long way!

Well we have seen baby steps on these 3 projects planned: ALT Hotel on 4th, Grandin City and now Great Gulf - Procura on Jasper - 100. All rectangular but all rather “fresh” with design treatment and some articulation. I like what I am seeing.

Well the Alldritt tower isn't a box, but who knows if it will get built.
