The feds are committing $1.37 billion to build the Broadway subway line in Vancouver and the Surrey-Newton-Guildford light rail project.

Trudeau says having spent some time at UBC, he knows how frustrating it can be to be stuck in traffic.

“The expansion of the Broadway line will add 5.7 km and six stations to the line,” the prime minister said about the new projects in Metro Vancouver. “These will include a stop at UBC’s Point Grey campus, which many students have been asking for for years.”

it seems he's conflating phase I to arbutus (5.7 km and six stations ) with phase II (rest of the way to ubc )

be ready for more of these re-announcement media stunts leading up to the 2019 fed election and local elections this fall. i'd rather hear about new funding for phase II to start just after phase I opens

btw: anyone remember seeing him on the b-line as a student way-back-when?

It's not all the way to UBC, well not in the first phase anyways. 5.7km only goes to Arbutus from VCC Clark station.

Those 6 stations are probably Arbutus, Granville, Oak, Broadway-Cityhall, Main, and Emily Carr

Trudeau, Horgan reconfirm backing of Metro Vancouver transit projects

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and B.C. Premier John Horgan were talking transit in Surrey.

The two leaders restated the federal and provincial governments’ commitment to funding the next round of transit projects slated for Metro Vancouver, including two major rapid-transit lines in Surrey and Vancouver.

Trudeau and Horgan were joined by Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson at Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus.

In June, TransLink’s board of directors and Mayors’ Council jointly approved the second phase of a $7.3-billion transit and transportation plan for the Metro Vancouver region.

The plan’s two marquee projects are rapid-transit lines in Surrey and Vancouver.

A 10.5-kilometre at-grade light-rail line is planned for Surrey, running between Guildford, City Centre and Newton. Procurement is expected to take place this year, with construction starting in 2020. The estimated cost is $1.65 billion.

Vancouver’s line will be an extension of SkyTrain’s Millennium Line that will run from VCC-Clark station to Arbutus through a bored tunnel under Broadway. It’s estimated that the project will cost $2.83 billion and be complete in 2025.

Phase 2 of the transit plan also includes more bus and HandyDart service, upgrades to the existing SkyTrain system, improvements to road, pedestrian and cycling networks, and planning for a proposed gondola on Burnaby Mountain.

Funding contributions for this phase of the plan are coming from three levels of government.

The federal government has committed to paying up to 40 per cent of the capital costs for major projects, which translates to $2.01 billion for this phase.

The province has agreed to pay for 40 per cent of all projects, for a total of $2.55 billion.

TransLink plans to pay for its share of capital and operating costs with fare revenues, property sales, internal savings, a two-per-cent fare hike, three-per-cent parking tax increase, a property tax increase of $5.50 for the average household, development cost charges and revenue from transit-related commercial opportunities. There will also be a 1.5-cent gas tax increase for Metro Vancouver.

The total regional cost is $2.71 billion, which includes $1.86 billion for capital and $855 million for operating costs.
