A little less positive on the international side:

1) AC dropping NRT
2) BA dripping LHR
3) AM gone
4) TS cutting capacity
5) AC pretty much a wash with the transfer of rouge to mainline
6) Sunwing is status quo

The bright spot is, as always, Westjet’s increases. And KLM going daily year round.

Yes. Compared to last winter though YYC-MSP was 2 daily CR9s/E75s

Get the jetway out of the pic and you'd have a nice pic of this new plane.

Ok then.

Hard comparing transborder especially due to the frequent changes and adjustments made. UA is another example. They tend to cut about 2-3 frequencies right after the Xmas peak then reinstate them in mid February.
In any event for the same period last winter YYC-MSP was 2 daily DL connection. Perhaps the 717s are flying longer this winter. And of course as I said above this could easily change again.

So.... moving on to the winter non-US sun flights.

This winter there will be 104 weekly flights to Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.

Weekly frequency breakdown by carrier:

Westjet 73
Sunwing 15
Air Canada 10
Air Transat 6

This really shows how important Westjet is to YYC. Somebody has to fill those ITB gates!

Sunwing has been stagnant the last few years.
Air Transat has slowly wound back services at both YYC and YEG. Also they will be an all A321 operation this winter. From YYC they will now only fly direct to CUN and PVR
Air Canada will have higher frequencies this winter thanks to the transfer from rouge to mainline. However they will only be flying to CUN, PVR and SJD. AC used to have a more impressive destination offering to places like ZIH, HUX, MBJ, VRA and SNU.
Oh yeah and AM is gone!

An interesting read!

https://www.thestar.com/business/2018/09...estjet-takes-a-predictable-nosedive.html

One of the facts I found especially fascinating was this one:

"Air Canada now outperforms all of its North American major-airline peers on the key metric of revenue per employee, at $688,000 to WestJet’s $392,000."

AC is doing well these days. I wonder what the cost per employee is though?

I'm guessing that a larger book of international travellers helps AC's figure.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I was referring to the winter scheds only. Just a comparison between winter 2017/18 and 2018/19.

This winter international (outside North America) will consist of:

AC daily to LHR (789)
AC daily to FRA (789)
KL daily to AMS (3pw 789 and 4pw 333)
HU 3 weekly to PEK (332)
WS 3 weekly to LGW (763)

Total 27 flights per week (down from 37) - but still not bad for winter flying.

Air Canada is a global Airline, and drives revenue differently. AC gets a lot of revenue on Long Hauls, which brings up there revenue per employee. They also sell lots of business class tickets over the Pacific and Atlantic.

On the surface that number means little just because of how differently they operate and where they fly.

Feels like the author has a chip on his shoulder about WestJet. That choice of metric is a bit of an odd one. I am not an aviation financial analyst, but that's the first time I've ever heard anyone care about that metric. Usually it's all about RASM, CASM, and yield.

In latest quarter earnings, AC's RASM is 14.4 cpm, WS is 13.7 cpm. AC's CASM is 15.1 cpm, and WS is 14.1 cpm. Yield: AC is 17.3 cents, WS is 16.4. Pretty close where it counts.

I'm not going to attempt to do a serious analysis of AC vs WS here, but suffice it to say that it's misleading to focus on the revenue per employee numbers.

The article also states that Southwest is non-unionised, which is false. SWAPA has one of the best working relationships with management of any airline.

They also don’t mention the executive “retirement” payouts and Swoop startup costs that likely contributed to the loss.

Thanks for posting that, I was wondering about that myself. Revenues are only one part of any company's story, as long haul flights bring in much more revenue, but the aircraft consumes much more fuel, the cost per employee will vary. Also it doesn't take into account debt servicing on new aircraft, etc..

My guess is that trip advisor created these at map based on the YouTube and got a few details wrong.
