Very nice!

For the size of your city (about 50% bigger than Moncton), your airport blows ours out of the water in terms of amenities.

Of course, due to St. John's relative isolation, your airport is a lot busier too, and has a better slate of destinations.

Up until last week that certainly wasn't the case. Before the expansion, all there was before security was a little reataurant (or bar....or both....I'm not sure, I've never been in there), a Tim Hortons, a Coyote Jacks, and that was it. Post security was a Tim Hortons with only coffee and a few muffins, and that's all.

Looking at YQM’s winter sun destinations for 2018-2019. I see Westjet is no longer offering any sun flights. First went the cancun flight 2 years ago when they Encore’d YQM and now the Orlando flight is axed. Both flights ran from October and December respectively and were always popular. Westjet has become just another Air Canada!

I wonder if the loss of the seasonal WJ flight from CYQM to Orlando isn't due to the launch of Swoop (the new WJ affiliated ULLC)? And, yes, WestJet is indeed becoming a clone of Air Canada. Swoop is WestJet's version of Air Canada Rouge. For Moncton to access these services on either AC or WJ, you have to fly to Toronto first now.

Swoop will become Canada’s first ultra low cost airline to fly to the United States when it launches service this fall to five popular tourist destinations in Florida, Nevada and Arizona.

The subsidiary of WestJet Airlines Ltd. will start Oct. 11 with flights to Las Vegas from Abbotsford, B.C., and Edmonton, Alta., about four months after Swoop began to fly.

Service will be added over the following couple of weeks between Hamilton, Ont., and Las Vegas as well as to the Florida cities of Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Tampa Bay. Flights between Edmonton and Phoenix will start Oct. 27.

Most destinations will be serviced a few times per week but daily service will be flown between Edmonton and Las Vegas.

The transborder service will be launched to these U.S. gateways as Swoop receives delivery of its fifth and sixth airplane, said Swoop president Steven Greenway.

“They really blend well to the model that we provide in terms of low cost, high volume type of leisure profile that we definitely are targeting,” he said in an interview.

Everyday one-way fares start as low as $149 including taxes and fees through April, however it will offer 4,100 seats at low promotional fares of $99 and $119 for travel booked online until Feb. 13.

YSJ looking on track to finally break 300,000 passengers this year. The daily Porter flight must be doing quite well. Nice to see some momentum there.

YSJ SETS ALL-TIME MONTHLY PASSENGER RECORD IN JULY 2018
Aug 08 2018

SAINT JOHN, NB – Saint John Airport Inc. celebrates another record-breaking month in July 2018 for Total Passengers.

The Saint John Airport is proud to announce their best monthly Passenger Traffic Results in the airport’s history. “28,005 people flew via the Saint John Airport last month,” said YSJ President and CEO Derrick Stanford. “That's a 15.3% increase versus July of last year and a new all-time monthly passenger record for our airport.”

Passenger growth is attributed to extra flights and boosted capacity by Air Canada and Porter Airlines.

July marks the seventh consecutive month that the airport has exceeded their passenger traffic results versus the same month in the prior year. If this momentum continues, YSJ is well on its way to achieving its goal of 300,000 passengers in 2018.

YQM is about to unveil their solution for drivers arriving at the terminal to pickup someone getting off a flight.
As you know if you are reading this forum, you can't stop your car near the terminal building to wait for the person you are picking up who has just got off a flight.
They are going to set up a nearby area where drivers can stop their cars and wait for the person they are picking up to call them on their cell phone. THEN you may pull up to the terminal building to get your passenger.
Clear as mud? The plan is designed to eliminate or at least reduce the bid line of cars all along the front of the terminal building. I'm not sure where this "cell phone pickup waiting area" for cars will be located, but I suspect along Aviation Blvd. That's purely a guess.

The airport fixed up two small lots on Aviation near the VW dealership. They aren't really new though. Cabs have used them forever.

Well reading this about the winter schedule at the GMIA i feel yet that the airport is getting the short end of the stick again when it comes to air service. I wish that the airport authority was more aggressive on getting more options out there for travelers. Now that i have moved to Regina i finding it hard to find good connecting options into Moncton. AC and WJ have horrible flights going in and out during winter. But hope that they get their act together and try to work with AC, WJ, and Porter to expand their offering.

Well, since the winter sun destination schedule out of YQM has been mentioned a few times, I guess it's time to post it.

http://cyqm.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/2018-2019-Winter-Sun-Destinations-soleil-dhiver.pdf

Orlando, Florida - Air Transat, Sunwing
Cancun, Mexico - Air Transat, Sunwing
Punta Cana, DR - Air Transat, Sunwing
Puerto Plata, DR - Sunwing
Varadero, Cuba - Air Transat, Sunwing
Montego Bay, Jamaica - Sunwing

The main difference from last year is the absence of the WestJet flight to Orlando. It's still possible we may see the Celebrity Cruise flight to Miami again. It was added to the schedule quite late last year.

YSJ hinting on social media about some sort of "Big Announcement" coming tomorrow.

Quote:
Okay Saint John, we have some BIG news. We can't tell you exactly what it is right now...but we're going to give you a few clues!

In this photo Jacques, our pup friend Grace, and that donut ALL have something in common that will help you uncover the mystery.

Can you figure it out?

I mean, the most obvious thing is Boston, but would be curious who would even take that route on given the current realities of hub & spoke air travel. A weird one off Porter route? Delta?

Must be a distraction to deflect attention from the YSJ announcement.

Delta tried a Boston route out of Fredericton in the early 2000s and couldnt make it work. Doubt they would ever return to NB. It would be a nice surprise though.

Wild guess but wondering if the announcement is a Dunkin Doughnuts kiosk? Dunkin HQ is in Boston (Canton) and Irving I believe owns the franchise rights for Atlantic Canada

mmmm, good catch. Didn't think about Dunkin Donuts... If it comes true, based on the replies to their social media posts, there's going to be a lot of disappointed folks hoping on a direct flight to Boston.

If YSJ’s ‘BIG’ News with the emphasis on ‘BIG’ in their Twitter feed is a Dunkin Donuts Kiosk…..I would have to say…..Get a Life!!

I'm certainly hoping the announcement is for something better than that!
