I lived near the State & Chestnut intersection both before that new construction and after. I mean, there's no question the 2 new buildings there made the pedestrian experience there a million times better. I used to on purpose never walk on that side of the street, but the new buildings definitely made it a lot more enjoyable. Up the street near Walton and Delaware and all those new buildings - same thing really. I used to avoid the west side of State walking because of how blank it was where No. 9 Walton is today. Okay I don't live in Chicago anymore and I think they were just starting construction of No. 9 Walton when I moved, but while visiting town 2.5 months ago, I stayed right nearby for old time's sake. Even No. 9 Walton has totally completed that intersection and made it 10X better.
Some of the change downtown in some areas is pretty remarkable compared to a decade ago. Of course, this isn't JUST downtown, but also other parts of town.
This is actually one of my favorite things here. Not because its dense or super walkable or anything, but the change is kind of crazy:
