Well, I am truly sorry, sorry, sorry to say this, but I have really become quite disgruntled with the inhabitants of our city and will bet my salary that within one week, that great clean up job on the before existing artwork, will now be a novelty and will most likely be vandalized real quick. I DO NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN but we all know what scum lurks in our streets these days. Glad you have a picture of it pristine. I so much want this city cleaned up of the street people, it is dire. Thank you McMinsen for the nice photos.

The Background

The story behind this building is long, but I’ll try to summarize, as there are important remarks from the UDP meeting to cover. In response, several community activists, including a member of the Order of Canada who is now running for city council, organized a campaign of protests, with some going as far to deliver a jar of bedbugs to Concord’s offices.

UDP Development Application Review

Given the projects history, it shouldn’t be surprising that the panel seemed to pity the applicant, who was given the impossible task of fitting both the health facility and 250 homes onto this property. That proved impossible in the end, and the proposal has been reduced to only 230 homes. In addition to consultation with Vancouver Coastal Health, the applicant has also met with design panels comprised of aboriginal youth and seniors from Chinatown. While one panellist guessed that this meant the colours of the building were representative of the Chinatown community, this element was actually suggested by the younger of the two groups. The panel was generally impressed to see that community comments and the panel’s previous review were incorporated into the design.

Good post, Feathered Friend, and good call on the need to support funding at higher levels and to show advocacy for better funding to actually get projects that house the most desperate funded now. Opposition/protest is easy, some might say, and the hard part is getting positive support. Action.

That woman's name is Jean Swanson. A little FYI. She's running for COPE.
