This turned out fantastic I think.

Very nicely broken up. Great scale.

I really like it.

There's one blade sign that looks like it could be in neon on the middle facade

Remember the park that was proposed for the corner of Richards and Smithe? Still nothing going on at the site, but there is a new sign with information (see pics from today at the bottom).

Here are a few quotes from over two years ago. Click on the links in the quotes to review the discussion and see the older renders and pics.

Figure 2: Revised Final Design

Figure 2 below illustrate the modifications made to the final design that reflect community requests to improve safety, aesthetics and social vibrancy.
Since the final open house, the design team have been working closely to finalize the park
design and prepare documents necessary to seek approval from the Park Board. If the final design is approved, the team will move forward to the next phases of the project and resolve the details and technical design with the intention of developing drawings and specifications that will be tendered for construction in early 2017. The aspirational goal is to begin construction by the spring of 2017 and open the park in the fall of 2018.
In order to achieve this goal, the design team will need to rapidly advance the design and coordinate with other initiatives taking place adjacent to the site."

Very fancy looking park.

Not sure if it needs to have bridges and all the jazz, but certainly better than whats there and a welcome green space!

It's needlessly overwrought, designed by a committee lacking at least one voice strong enough to say "enough".

It's an urban park. I think it's great. Far more interesting than a dark flat green space. Nobody is ever happy with things in this city. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Why is the park taking so long to build? Is it because the City has run out of funds?

This park site has now been on the slate for over a decade. How long does "eventually" constitute?

The only park promise that's taken longer to non-deliver is the Cirque park in NEFC.

it means it will be built, in the future, at some point.

its not like this city is hard up for parks. and in the mean time the City makes money from people parking on it. at this rate the park will pay for itself, i say leave it as a parking lot until then!

The site was identified as a possible future park many years ago, but there was no funding, and the completion of Emery Barnes Park was a priority. It's being funded in part from DCLs (Development Cost Levies) and those accumulate steadily over time, with the Park Board only getting a proportion of the payments. As an entirely separate legal entity, they have to pay the City for the land, and pay for the construction. This project became a possibility to be built sooner when an additional sum was offered by Westbank as part of the CAC (Community Amenity Contribution) for Telus Garden.

The first design emerged in April 2016, so about two years ago. It's been refined and altered quite a bit since then, although many of the elements of the original design are still included in the latest version. It looks as if some of the changes that are reflected in this 'final' version reflect greater consideration of safety and liability issues - the railings are actually designed now, not just shown as theoretical lines on a drawing that the previous renders showed. If they start building this year, it'll be under three years since the first image of the idea for the space was published. (Here's the 2017 version - source)
