While we're at it, any update about the proposed mixed use building at Maryland and Westminster Ave? It's been more than a year since the last Free Press story about it. Is it kaput? I haven't seen any activity on that site.

It’s official: Newport centre renovations are underway. Signs and scaffolding are going up.

His website says he teaches at UM Architecture, but he is not listed on the website as a Faculty member. I am guessing he teaches occasionally as a sessional lecturer. No need to worry about his ideas penetrating too deeply into academia.

Just heard from a reliable source that Peguis is going to build a retail complex on the greenspace in front of their building on Portage Ave. Here is a rudimentary image.

The rendering has the sign on the building reading “NEWPORT CENTRE” rather than the inexplicably American “NEWPORT CENTER” that’s there now.

That massive setback and greenspace on Portage doesn't really fit the area, so not sure it would be a big loss. But the image seems to suggest a suburban, big box type building that might look terrible in that location.

My question is: are urban reserves subject to city zoning and planning oversight? Or is this like the military base over on Ness which recently built a Tim Hortons (Ness and Mt Royal Rd.) not subject to any city oversight or planning approvals?
