I wonder how the new government in Ontario would affect Ottawa-Gatineau balance. If the price of gas in Ontario drops 10 cents then I could see Gatineau gas stations losing a lot of business unless Quebec bites the bullet and increases its border-area gas tax rebate.

If the income tax cut and corporate tax cut go through it would make the Ontario-Quebec tax difference even greater and negatively effect Gatineau's development.

I was just thinking about this the other day as well.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. The one advantage Beechwood has is less vehicular traffic, which makes it more welcoming to pedestrians.

Montreal Road is primarily businesses aimed at a local clientele. I can't imagine anyone who lived more than a few km away going there.

Quelque Chose Patisserie, Bobby's Table, Cadman's Bagels (haven't tried them), maybe the LCBO if it were on the way, but other than that, yes.

Isn't that what a main street is - businesses aimed at local clientele?

It seems like most successful main streets are drawing clientele from outside of the area.

Speaking of Montreal Road, do we have a thread for this development? I don't think we do...

Montreal Road is depressing. Yeah, Bobby's Table is nice, but some of the buildings along the road are run down. There's prostitution close by (which my eyes were only opened to a few weeks ago). Pawn shop, sketchy motel, etc. I take the 12 bus down Montreal Road almost everyday and live in the area. Montreal Road has potential but right now it's depressing. But with that being said, I'm checking out the new co-working space soon so I might be spending more time on Montreal Road.

And a pawn shop, a suspect motel, buildings in need of repair, and soon the Salvation Army development.

Come the revolution, every "community association" is getting exiled to Hans Island:

Quote:
Last month Ottawa's built heritage subcommittee ordered Roca to take another crack at its design, which would have placed the building just 30 centimetres from the property line. Neighbours feared the brick wall of the building would loom over them as they walked past on the sidewalk.

Roca now plans to leave a 1.6-meters setback.

The community would have liked to see the building shifted even farther from the sidewalk, the CCCA's Shawn Barber said. But Barber acknowledge there's also a dire need for more rental units in the area.

"Our community association is prepared to be flexible also," he said.

My last foray onto Montreal Road was at lunch time in early spring, I walked east to west from almost St. Laurent, and ended up at Eddy's Quick Lunch.

During my short walk I walked by two people passed out on the sidewalk, was followed by an older gentlemen who was bleeding from a huge gash in his head (I asked him if he wanted help but he just asked over and over for change, and got a little grabby), and I was propositioned twice (but I learned what 'hairy palms' means, which is a bonus I guess...).

Eddy's was awesome, the waitress knew all the patrons by name, food came out quickly and was reasonably priced. I got to see the true community and hospitality that people talk about in Vanier.

During my lunch I was able to watch four police officers forcefully evict someone from the apartment next door and there was lots of screaming and partial nudity.

All-in-all quite an experience.

Honestly, I defy anybody to be able to tell the difference in impact between 0.3 m and 1.6 m considering that the edge of the sidewalk and the property line probably don't co-incide.

Colonnade Bridgeport plans residential midrises across from Carlingwood Mall

BY: OBJ staff

An Ottawa developer is planning to construct a pair of residential buildings at the corner of Carling and Woodroffe avenues, across the street from one of the city’s oldest shopping centres.

Colonnade Bridgeport has filed a rezoning application with the city for the property at 485 Ancaster Rd. The L-shaped parcel currently features several lowrise commercial buildings that would be demolished as part of the project. The iconic Golden Palace restaurant is adjacent to the property and not part of the proposal.

Colonnade Bridgeport is proposing a six-storey and 12-storey building for the site, primarily fronting onto Carling Avenue and containing approximately 230 residential units in addition to 10,000 square feet of retail space.

The developer would also include a new public park.

I know we have a thread for this one, but for the love of God I cannot find it. I wish there was a "search" function on this site.

But anyway, update on Claridge's parking lot at the corner of Queen and Lyon, where the Lyon Station west entrance is located. They are currently building a small, wood framed building. Looks like it could be a sales centre. Can't really think of any other function.

There is. On the thin blue toolbar near the top.

Even with the search function, I can't find that thread...

EDIT: Doesn't look like the search can look back more than a year and a half or so. I could be wrong.

This is interesting ... maybe the parking lot won't be there forever after all.
