Agree.

But it does seems preposterous to maintain a single story retail store in a downtown - saving the facade didn't seem reasonable either.

But I do hear where you're coming from. This city moves on at a dizzying pace.

If it was 120 years old, it would be sad. As it was built in 1971, not so much.

Well the Edward Chapman brand is 127 years old and will likely cease to exist now.

Looks likely; Edward Chapman makes more money as a property manager these days. He sold the site for three times assessed value last year "Edward Chapman owner Edward Chapman told BIV he is not sure how long the Executive Group will let him stay on the site that his family bought in 1966 and built the store on in 1971.

“People think that our store is a heritage building or something like that, but it is relatively modern and just has a facade to make it look old in an old English style,” he said.

Chapman, who is 57, may reopen his store in a smaller space but he said he may simply close the 127-year Edward Chapman retail brand, which has been a sideline business in recent years. Chapman’s main business has been to manage commercial and rental properties. He plans to continue to do that and not simply to retire." [source].

It is sort of funny to imagine that most of downtown Vancouver looked like that back when it was built

I'm glad to see a new hotel, the City is terrifyingly short of hotel rooms so it's good to see this coming online. And it isn't that far from Gastown, the maps on those promos are always atrocious but realistically this hotel is walkable to/from Gastown no problem

There was also a shot of Yaletown in with the Gastown shots....
but I guess they are playing up the heritage aspect of the old building.

Amazon is taking 98,560 sq/ft in The Exchange, so the building is effectively leased out:

I think the Exchange's new lobby is just ugly and tacky to the worst degree. Only love the heritage portion of it. It shows the contrast of the aesthetics and thoughts put into a design from a person of yesteryear versus one today.

I'm assuming this will be temporary until they get their new office at the Post office, right?

This is in addition to yes.

The only actual Amazon office existing that may be closed when the Post opens is their space in Telus, but that is just me speculating, they could very well keep that one too. Their offices at 401 West Georgia and the Exchange are long term offices. The only short term space they have is their big commitments in wework offices at Bentall.
