That's disappointing. It would have been iconic.

Colour me shocked.
The only color you see is the rose color through those glasses you're wearing.

Make better arguments and maybe I'll have something proper to work with.

you tell me to stop my car to pick up the garbage along Sargent. I really don't think that will help fill the dozens of empty storefront, nor help with the young girls winking at me while stopped at a light, nor aid me in hammering on my brakes when an intoxicated shirtless guy decides to cross the street. Sargent is far from a "beautiful" part of our city. However, i must admit, it was good to see the huge empty storefront across from safeway has been filled with a Dollarama.

Picking up the odd piece of trash and frequenting a local business for lunch would certainly do more for the neighbourhood than crying on the internet

I lived on Furby, between Sargent and Cumberland. We wanted to be a part of "revitalizing" the neighborhood, but felt very alone in that. Some good restaurants along Sargent, but man does it need gentrifying.

Exactly. Plus you might notice something new that you don't notice at 60 km/h. It's easy to scream on a web forum and wait for someone else to fix things. When you try to take some initiative and contribute something the community it's pretty surprising how quickly it catches on.

Agreed. It is a dump, one of the "must avoid" parts of the city.

I walked home from the HSC today and I said "Good morning" to the people in that area I passed on my way home to downtown. I didn't get to say anything to the man sleeping on the door-step of the closed food store on Notre Dame and Cumberland.

Yep it is always better to pretend everything is just fine. Everything is great. No problems here.

That huge triangle bordered by Isabel, Cumberland and Maryland have the largest proportion of rooming houses in the city. You don't walk around that area at night. Especially alone.

What's ugly about downtown Vancouver? Excluding the east side, everything is clean and well maintained, lots of people on the sidewalks day and evening, and NO surface parking lots.

I was in the area late Saturday night, alone. A Police car was circling the street, making me feel a bit more safe than otherwise. That Balmoral Hotel needs to go though. It's a crime magnet.

If someone tried to attack me, where would I go, to the Balmoral? Everything else is CLOSED.

Saw the former jewellery store and former Central Photo building demolished.

Is something going to replace that building?

Love me some mordens chocolates and the sargent strip has a 3 or 4 restaurants we hit up on the regular. Heck when i had hair my barber was rite on the corner of sargent and maryland, made the trip every 3 weeks.

No bias here, i've never felt threatened walking around that area. Glad to see some people want to help clean it up.

Agreed, from an urbanist perspective Sargent and Ellice are two of the best streets in town, imo. I took a long walk on Ellice after 10pm last night (because the evening bus service 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵) and my only interactions were being asked for directions to Beverley St and being told to "work it, gurl". For me, liveliness is way more important than beauty in a city.

The area right around the Balmoral is indeed disconcerting, though. Along with Higgins & Main it's the only area around downtown where I (as a 30-something male) feel uncomfortable walking at night.
