It's sad that this keeps happening, some of the things and places that make Vancouver so great are quickly being replaced with things with no character, that most can't afford and in my opinion damage the character of the neighborhoods that made the area so great in the first place.
Want to add to this that we lost the Moderne Burger over in Kitsilano to the same thing.

I was in Vancouver for 5 days last week. Gutted. All my favorite buildings are being gutted or demo'd. All my favorite restaurants are slowly being replaced by generic chains and Poke bars. What were discount hole-in-the-wall restaurants are either being forced to down-size portions or increase prices. I already lost my desire to camp. Many of my favorite hiking trails and local camping sites have been overrun with tourists that have no regard for nature.

I had fond memories of being at the Empire Landmark Hotel in the 90s. The restaurant was a good spot for a date, and the hotel wasn't too terribly expensive if you were downtown for the night. Detest the fact that luxury condos are going on that spot. **** the city. Legit shat on my childhood...

Things change man.

There are plenty of new good restaurants all over the city.

There are tens of thousands of fantastic trails within an hour of Vancouver, try a new one.

There are plenty of new architecturally interesting buildings being built.

Sorry you don't like camping anymore?

Let me guess. Cactus Club @ English Bay? Venice Cafe in Gastown? Urban Eats Bistro in Yaletown offering $18 burger and fries? (The last two are made up). You get the idea, many of the long-time favorites developed a reputation for providing decent food at fair prices. Generic brightly lit restaurants with uncomfortable seating and overinflated prices are replacing these.

Thousands? Come on now. My buddy has worked on several GIS assignments for a local Tour company. They have pretty much mapped out every trail for them. One criticism they have is that there are so few trails available unless you are willing to go into unmarked zones.

Which means it's ok to tear down signature Vancouver structures?

Get out some more. Aside from the dozens upon dozens of fantastic creative restaurants in Gastown, Chinatown and Mt Pleasant, even downtown has some great new restaurants. Try Royal Dinette or Nightingale for great food without leaving the core. If you want to venture a mere 10 minutes out I can give you a list of 20 simply fantastic restaurants. Vancouver's food scene is 10x what it used to be.

I can't think of a single large city on earth with more trails and hikes within a 30-60 minute drive of downtown. Thousands is probably an understatement.

No, I've been pretty open about how I think this is a mistake, but to make it sound like 'all my favourite buildings are getting torn down' is an incredibly hyperbolic statement.

Cities are dynamic entities, especially those as young and fast growing as Vancouver. If you expect a city like this to stand still you're going to be perpetually disappointed.

Lmao. Yup everything is being gutted or torn down. Like the chevron on Georgia. That was my favourite local gas station to fill up at. So many great memories from my childhood. And all my favourite lumber mills on false creek are gone. The city doesn't care about my memories! Now I have to get my lumber at those generic chain lumber stores

Seriously. I can empathize with logicbomb, we have all seen things we like go. But the comments are way over dramatic. Just in my opinion

Losing the Empire Landmark - considering what's replacing it - is sad, but not the end of the world, much as I liked the LandmarK; my biggest heartache was losing the Birks Building.

No not a fan I think the new building will be a positive development. I find that Nimbyism is a terrible excuse and a huge problem in the city.

You just listed two pricey restaurants....It wasn't too long ago (8 years) where two could eat for as little as $20 downtown. Many of old "cheap" restaurants and dives have disappeared. This sort of proves my point about Downtown and the surrounding area being somewhat pricey for regular joes.

Except it isn't hyperbolic when you see how many old buildings have been torn down in the past 20 years and how many are almost guaranteed to be demo'd or modified. The Hudson Bay's downtown building was just sold last week to an Asian developer. Guaranteed we see another project akin to the Exchange.

I grew up expecting the City and surrounding suburbs to evolve, but we cannot ignore this city's roots. It was once a logging and manufacturing powerhouse- and it legitimately feels we are eradicating any traces of what gave this City any character. My old man recalls how furious he was when they demolished the Birks building. This City tried hard to "modernize" in the 70's...It would have been great to retain some elements from the booming years in Vancouver.

I can’t wait to see the iconic masterpieces going up in this tower’s place...

Seriously, what a joke. History really does repeat.

those who forget are doomed to repeat. just as in history, the losses of the past are not realized until well into the future. most iconic buildings destroyed over the decades we not missed until decades after their destruction.

this building is not one that is exciting, a marvel of design, or from a period that is exciting in architecture. but, the fact that it was built before the post-stunted years, it had an impact on the skyline and contributed to the breaking up of a table top.

the loss here isn't the building itself, it is the impact that will be missed. the ability to stand out will be missed. the proof that something else does exist will be missed. the Empire is what this city was, a city where you could build Landmarks from the tallest buildings in the British Empire, to one of the most ornate Art Deco buildings in the world, to one of the best transit systems in the world.

what is being built in Empire's place is exactly what this city is now. a city where being the same is desired, to cookie-cutter overpriced residential units that site empty, to building the same mediocre transit as everyone else.

to me, this is fitting as what is happening here is exactly what the city is today. but what will tomorrow be? that is what the fate of these new towers will tell us and maybe it will be something exciting like the times of past.

I am so incredibly happy this building is being replaced.

I think this is the worst eye sore in all of Vancouver downtown.
