That eel is a pretty interesting piece.

Blair is nearly done. The art work is up (hanging strands of glass pieces (?) over the stairs and tracks) and it looks good. Only thing that seems to be missing is the top parts of the elevator "cage" through the roof.

I chuckle at the retail convos here. I was just in Sweden, now I am in Warsaw, and the sheer number and variety of retail at transit stations (be it metro, light rail, train etc), is unbelievable, and its often squeezed into small spaces in the passageways, like as if they dug a space of 10x10 ft and voila. Fast food, bakeries, newspapers, shoe repair, watch repair, sushi, electronics, you name it, most stations have it! Yet in Ottawa, we wonder where they will put one coffee shop, or if they will even put one in at all.
Its almost as if the people building these systems in Ottawa have no imagination and don't know what users of transit need or want.....errr wait, its because that's actually the case!

In many ways instead of shoehorning a certain type of business in a specific space, they need to just make the space available (for a fee) and let the market decide what works. If a business can make a go of it in the space, it is providing a service.

I'd favour a model where the city charges reduced rent and in return the tenant is obligated to remain open throughout the entirety of the LRT service period.

I was there around 11am. I loved it. It was one on my favourite Doors Open experienced in years. What did you think of it?

I quite enjoyed it, though when I went it was very busy and I had troubles getting in to see the actual simulator (i just used my height to see over everyone). I did have some good conversations with some of the people there.

I asked about how it would handle ice and snow and he confirmed, as I figured, the trains are largely self plowing and can handle up to about a foot of snow, which even with 15 minute frequencies, should be fine. If they do get a big dump overnight, they have a diesel powered machine that will clear the snow.

His answer regarding ice worried me a bit. The person I was talking to wasn't aware of any tools for dealing with ice buildup on the catenary and admitted that they did have issues last winter with exactly that. Once again, if trains are running regularly, it shouldn't be a problem, but overnight it could be an issue. Hopefully since they did experience an issue with it, they are looking for a solution and not just ostriching.

I was there late in the day, and when I asked about ice, I was told they actually plan on running trains continuously through the night during ice storms.

That's an interesting solution. Would those trains have drivers? They could run them straight through without stopping them at stations, reducing the number of trains needed to keep a required time interval. I wonder if my question made them research the answer so that they could answer it later.

Why not add a faux pantograph to their plow vehicle (I forget the special name they used for the vehicle) with some type of ice scraper. Just the normal bending of the catenary (from the pantograph applying pressure to it) should cause the ice to crack and scrape off easily.

Yup. Totally the case.

Probably just the electrocution risk if they don't insulate it correctly.

And that isn't a problem with the real pantograph's? We know how to make insulators. The scraper itself could be made out of some sort of insulating material, as could the supports.

I just meant that the pantograph on the Citadis is installed by people who's jobs it is to do that. Putting a fake on on the diesel plow would be an in-house job, they might not want to take the risk.

I swung by the simulator as well, and someone told me the front wheels (on each end) will be able to spray sand onto the rails which has been working to provide traction. But they did say the sheer weight of the trains has been enough to get through the ice and snow they've built up.

One driver I spoke to said they pretty much get out every day to train, which is great. She also said that its slightly terrifying to start a run when the tracks are blanketed with snow, because they just have to trust that the tracks are still there HAHA

Finally, I remember a little while ago the discussion here was about all the testing happening in the "wrong" direction. Then when I was watching the simulator, she was ALSO driving the wrong way. Apparently they do a lot of testing on both sides but it will indeed be the normal way of travel.

Running a train at regular intervals, commensurate with how much freezing rain is accumulating or expected to accumulate, will keep the lines from icing.

True, but unless they run trains all night ling (as 1overcosc said), the overnight period is where they could have risk of ice buildup.

Is this an issue in Calgary or Edmonton?
