i grew up in suburban wilmette, and my wife grew up in brookfield, WI (suburban milwaukee). both of them >95% white and >95% upper middle - upper class.
we decided to stay in the city to raise our family because we weren't willing to make the compromises to our urban lifestyle that a move to the burbs would entail.
as for schooling, we intend to send our two little ones to our local CPS school (Waters). i am confident they will get just as good of an education there as they would at any suburban school. in fact, their education will likely be superior as they will be exposed to a far greater diversity of races/ethnicities/socio-economic classes than i was growing up in lilly-white wilmette. as our nation becomes ever more diverse, i feel like kids who learn to navigate the whole diversity game early on will have a leg up on the kids hermetically sealed in their suburban bubbles, like i was.
