I am curious, out of all those who say they are raising their kids in the city, where did you grow up? All most all my friends moved to the suburbs when they had kids ....however most of them grew up in the suburbs. We all do well financially but i really think that people gravitate to what they already know and feel comfortable with. i feel the majority of them mention schools as the reason also....so until the city can show much more than their magnate schools as superior to many of the suburban schools. This will keep happening for a majority of chicagoland residents....

Than you. South Loop Elementary is our neighborhood school. I have heard mixed reviews. We have friends in W. Loop and all swear by Skinner.

I grew up in KC suburbs, but I really don't want to end up back in a suburb. We might go private school route if we only have 1 kid.

TransUnion and UIC announce endowed professorship of data science

May 29, 2018

UIC PR News

Quote:
As Chicago continues its growth in the information and technology sectors, two local powerhouses are joining forces to help address the mounting need for data science expertise.

TransUnion, a leading global information solutions provider headquartered in Chicago, has partnered with the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for the creation of the TransUnion Professor of Data Science. The endowment is designed to further advocate for the study of data science and the potential careers and advancements it brings.

Chicago Market in Prime Position

Chicago is widely considered an emerging data science talent hub, in no small part to the opportunities afforded by local companies. Since 2012, Chicago has added more than 15,000 technology jobs and many growing technology companies are either moving to the area or reinvesting in their presence here[4].

TransUnion operates at the forefront of the data science field; the Chicago-based firm has developed numerous innovative solutions to not only help business customers, but also abides by their commitment to Information for Good, helping millions of consumers either gain access to more affordable loans or to prevent identity theft and other online fraud.

Powerhouse Partnership

The decision to partner with UIC's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences stemmed from this commitment, as it presented the opportunity to reach an incredibly diverse population and expand new career opportunities in Chicago. As Chicago’s largest university and only public research institution, UIC boasts a highly-varied student population (with no racial/ethnic majority) and is ranked among the top 10 most diverse universities in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report[5].

Moreover, UIC is a research powerhouse, as one of only four institutions in Illinois (and only 115 in the country) to be designated R1, the highest category for research activity assigned by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The university was ranked among the top 25 best public universities in the country, according to a 2018 Wall Street Journal and Times Higher Education ranking.

"We are truly grateful to TransUnion for their generous support and partnership," said Astrida Orle Tantillo, dean of UIC's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. “The TransUnion Professor will bring a wealth of expertise to our Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science program, and support our goal of graduating well-rounded data science students who have the critical thinking, problem-solving and communications skills necessary to fill important industry gaps and meet future workforce demands."

More About Endowed Professorship of Data Science

The TransUnion professor will be recruited through a national search and will work to enhance existing UIC strengths and invigorate research, teaching and consulting in data science. The professor will be appointed as a senior faculty member in the Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science department and will join a large group of researchers from across the campus who are engaged in data science research and applications. The partnership will build UIC’s capacity to continually develop innovative undergraduate and graduate curriculum, professional education opportunities and interdisciplinary research groups.
Tribune Reported to be $500,000 endowment.

i grew up in suburban wilmette, and my wife grew up in brookfield, WI (suburban milwaukee). both of them >95% white and >95% upper middle - upper class.

we decided to stay in the city to raise our family because we weren't willing to make the compromises to our urban lifestyle that a move to the burbs would entail.

as for schooling, we intend to send our two little ones to our local CPS school (Waters). i am confident they will get just as good of an education there as they would at any suburban school. in fact, their education will likely be superior as they will be exposed to a far greater diversity of races/ethnicities/socio-economic classes than i was growing up in lilly-white wilmette. as our nation becomes ever more diverse, i feel like kids who learn to navigate the whole diversity game early on will have a leg up on the kids hermetically sealed in their suburban bubbles, like i was.

Interesting, I work with a woman who has sent her daughter to S. Loop since K and is now in 6th grade. She loves it. Looking at the PARCC scores by ethnicity, it seems to perform very well. It does better than Elmhurst schools (a suburban school district that gets touted a lot) in every demographic.

Chicago is the 9th most expensive city on the planet, according to UBS's 2018 index:

https://www.ubs.com/microsites/price...e/?split=false

I...guess that's a good thing

Strange list, as San Francisco is not on there..

Los Angeles number 20. I guess this list does not take into account housing.

Although in downtown L.A. housing can be free from what I have seen on the street.

Tech behemoths Facebook, Google planning big Chicago office expansions
Quote:
Facebook and Google are mapping big expansions in Chicago, where real estate searches by two of the nation’s other technology giants have been the center of attention.

Menlo Park, Calif.-based Facebook is negotiating to lease more than 200,000 square feet in a recently constructed office tower at 151 N. Franklin St. in the Loop, according to sources.

Meanwhile, sources said, Google plans to add more than 100,000 square feet of office space in the city’s Fulton Market district, where the company already has a large Midwest headquarters.
this is welcome news.

I've seen this list before. It's methodology is bizarre. LA has lower incomes and higher COL than Chicago according to the US government.

Yes, I'm single, I'd also like to get married and have kids if I can find the right woman. Oh right, with two people you'd have a much bigger household income. I do audio visual support, such as video conferencing, broadcasting meetings, managing installations of conference room equipment, and filming. It's really easy for me, I'd like to do something like project management that's more advanced. Or something with urban development would be really cool!

Wife and I grew up in different western suburbs (Wheaton/Glen Ellyn/Naperville area). Our reasons for wanting to stay in the city echo Steely Dan's comments exactly (diversity, urban lifestyle, etc.).

Most of my friends who got married and had kids before 30 moved to the suburbs. Most of the ones who waited for marriage/kids want to stay in the city.

that completely mirrors my experiences as well.

maybe the people who coupled-off early and started making kids right away and then bolted for the burbs simply saw city-living as some very temporary place to go play for several years after graduating from college, whereas those of us who waited to do the family thing, waited because we fundamentally love city living and wanted to enjoy more of it before setting the monumental and all-encompassing responsibility of parenthood upon our shoulders?

and now that the responsibility is finally there, it's like "fuck it, i still don't want to live in some god-forsaken burb. we'll make this work".

Awesome news about Facebook and Google expanding in the city. Not surprised one bit. Also, the article about Facebook hiring more and the guy from NJ saying it looks like they're trying to hire another 500 to 1000 jibes somewhat with this..

These kinds of announcements are not only going to add a ton of jobs, but they are going to at least help the launch of smaller office tower projects, if not a larger one
