I'm not convinced about the longest escalator claim. Just last week during the media tour, they (including Manconi) were claiming we'll have the busiest lrt system in North America. That is system, not line. Depending on your definition of "light rail" and "ridership", we'll be solidly sitting somewhere from second to fourth.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_North_American_light_rail_systems_by_ridership

EDIT: In fact, looks like Edmonton's Rogers Place beats us at 140 feet (to our 120 feet). And there claim is :one of Canada's longest", so there could be others;

EDIT 2: Sorry, the claim is longest Transit escalator. Haven't found a Canadian transit system with a longer escalator.

It's quite clear that this claim has been made about the line, which is highly probable considering the transitway numbers. Granted, the Confed line is more of a light metro than a traditional LRT line like they exist in Edmonton and Calgary.

The escalators at Granville Station in Vancouver (the highest on SkyTrain) are impressive, but only 14 metres (46 feet) tall*. Not sure how long it is though.

And they don't seem that much narrower than Montreal's Metro station platforms. I was at Guy-Concordia today, and I don't think the platform was any wider than 12' (possibly as little as 10').

That and the claim that by a Thursday the LRT would have carried a million passengers for the week. At 10K ppdph, the Confederation line would need to be running at full capacity 12 hours a day. We'd have to start on a second parallel line now!

My guess is that when the novelty of the "new train smell" is gone, the Stage 1 line will average no more than 120 to 150K a day so it would take at least a solid week or more to get a million passengers.

How does the length of this escalator compare to the "Expresscalator" at Bayshore?

(name not official, my family just calls it that)

That tall one in the convention centre in Montreal is the Deathscalator.

I think 120k is even a bit high. I do get that Ottawa has high ridership numbers but if you compare Edmonton which is a similarly sized city, currently with 24km of LRT it is "only" achieving 112k. Yet isn't stage one only 12.5km?

Not really. 1 million a week would bring us into the 50ish million riders a year that they were predicting, and is about in line with what the transitway it replaced was. This isn't new ridership, it's just the existing ridership converted to rail. The transitway out performed Edmonton's LRT, not really sure why though.

I suspect the ability to provide direct service from your neighbourhood to downtown was a major factor. Of course we will loose that with LRT, but hopefully it will still be time competitive and more reliable and that will be enough to help OC Transpo keep its market share. Does Edmonton have something similar to our post LRT Connexion buses, or do they rely on local routes to get people to their LRT?

Most of Edmonton's LRT stations either have regular bus stops, a transit centre, or a park and ride lot.

Good Day. Belfast MSF update:

The foundations are in and the structural steel is being erected for the LMF building on the northeast side.

2 large loose bunches of rail have been placed inside the main storage shed extension - but no ties yet.

EnJoy!
