If AC is able to source a couple more frames I bet NRT survives as a summer seasonal over the near future.
The thing with Hainan is there were two frequencies remaining available to Canada. The fact they didn’t use those to increase YYC-PEK still casts doubt on the viability of that route. Instead they chose to start YVR-TSN-SZX at only two weekly. Despite HU’s desire to have at least three weekly on that route it was capped at only two as that’s what is allowed under the current allotments. So despite that they still chose option B (YVR-TSN-SZX) over a possible option A (increase YYC-PEK).

Due to China's 1 airline, 1 route policy, it was in HU's best interest to jump on YVR-TSN and lock that market in, or risk losing it to other Chinese carriers. In that regard, YYC-PEK's performance wouldn't matter.

HU's plan was most likely to start as many routes to Canada as they could, and then sit and wait for Canada to grant more rights, after which they can increase frequency.

Not a financially sound plan, mind you. Explains partly why HNA Group, HU's parent company is burning a lot of cash, and needs more.

Yes to start as many commercially viable routes as possible. Therefore, they see this route as more commercially viable than adding frequencies at this time. There is the possibility they will cut YYC-PEK altogether and move those allotments. That is if China is not granted more slots into Canada. Canada still has plenty of unused frequencies available so giving China even more would be so unbalanced and we know how the Canadian government doesn’t like doing that.

With Westjet's Paris service starting end of May, does anyone have an inside scoop on if they will be having an introductory sale of epic proportions?

Pretty sure the epic sale already happened when the schedule was first loaded in late January. "One-way intro fares from Halifax to Paris or London are available now for just $199 all in.", said the press release on Jan 28. (https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/westjet-heads-to-paris-and-london-from-halifax-671641603.html)

Now it's just the regular semi-random ongoing seat sales...

Looks like NRT will be resuming March 23, with daily flights.

Make of that what you will... I personally don't care as long as it comes back.
An AC agent told me the same thing. They also mentioned there were days the route was less than half full. But either way, I’m glad to see it wasn’t permanently killed.

On another note, today is Aeromexico’s last flight.

I still believe that AZA will get Swooped next winter. Perhaps with a few other transborder routes from YYZ.

NRT also had weaker loads this winter too, partially due to AC opening YVR-YZF.

I’m excited for nonstop to YQB. Such a beautiful city and no pesky connections in YYZ.

Route will be summer seasonal, but WS is apparently open to the idea of making it year round. The skiers in Quebec need to support the route in winter though. A few Albertans in Quebec during the winter "carnaval" wouldn't hurt either !

Timed for cnx to everything out west, too... no reason this shouldn't work. In case anyone has forgotten the scope of the WS late bank, in July it'll be YVR, YEG, YMM, YXE, YYJ, YQR, YKA, YCD, YXX, YQQ, YQU, YQL, YXC, YXH, YLW, YXY...
Do they have much in the way of California connections in that bank. It has a shot season but Quebec City functions as a home port for a number of cruise ships.

Operating full summer seasonal service would be a good first step to eventual year round service. Year round is a long way off, IMHO.

YYC-YQB will either end up like YYC-YYT (summer seasonal only) or like YYC-YQM, YYC-YDF and cut completely. There is lots of one stop connection opportunities included AC rouge running 319/321 on YYZ-YQB This is a keep airplanes flying type of seasonal operation.

Most of the connections can all ready be handled through YYZ Those that cant use YYZ are too small services to worry about.

Assuming a lot of people on here are aviation enthusiasts... which I myself am not, but since I've discovered Flightradar24 app I'm finding myself running out the door with my binoculars every time an A380 flies over. Damn those jets are huge!

Anyone else having this problem? lol

Yup! QF93 just flew overhead at about 7,000 on its way to LAX.
No binoculars required!

I have been through YYZ over 60 times. While there have been disappointments, there have been way more times when being at the large hub has gotten me home despite being in a tight situation (delayed, cancelled, oversold, weather, etc.).

Compared to other airports (BOS, EWR, JFK, ATL, ORD, LAX, LHR, FRA), YYZ is a great airport to travel through. The biggest advantage for YYZ is that all flights are out of the same terminal (provided its most unatural to connect between the airlines in T1 and T3. Other airports have connections across terminals. Given the airport size, the amount of walking is manageable.

So, in short I would rather connect in YYZ than YYC.

Flair launching YYC

Looking at flairair.ca it looks like Flair is launching some new routes from YYC this summer:

YVR
YLW
YWG

I guess they can't ignore YYC anymore... limited services but enough to start shaking things up.

They must be swamped with calls of interest, as their website has the following notice now for 8 straight days [sarcasm]:

ALERT – HIGH CALL VOLUMES - CUSTOMER CONTACT CENTRE
We are experiencing very high call volumes with longer than normal wait times. To assist in serving you better, we suggest an alternative method of contacting us at our support email. Please include all pertinent details and send your message to [email protected] Thank you for your patience.
