They'll talk about diversifying the economy as long as oil prices are low. As soon as they go up they'll forget about it like they always do and go back to their usual ways. The best thing that can happen to the Alberta economy will be for oil prices to never go back up again. Perhaps then they'll get serious about building a diversified economy, building up tech, services, even some high value added manufacturing not tied to oil.

I think it's best to be patient and not get to obsessed by the percentage of space available as it's the effect of overbuilding. I don't like the recent decision by the city to spend upwards of a hundred million dollars to lure new businesses to Calgary. I do take it back if these monies will be mostly used to speculate on the development of local businesses. That doesn't cost anywhere near a hundred million though.

For me this is a great skyline. A great collection on individual pieces that create a sense of place and identity.

Agreed....our business slowed down but there is still a lot of good business going on in this town. It just isn't O&G based. This is nowhere near as bad as it was with the NEP.

Little too much warmth in that photo, yikes. Whoever edited that did an interesting* job.

Nice Montreal photos.

Montreal's skyline's growth is especially heartening when considering that it's coming after DECADES of stagnation and despair. When I joined SSP we were all tripping about cheap-— PoMo 28 storey condos. Now we couldnt be less bothered when one is proposed.

The skyline is growing around an already dense and storied urban fabric. For me, a skyline is truly interesting when it is a collection of different styles from different epochs.

No offense to Calgary, Edmonton et al. but a collection of giant brand new towers will never be as interesting to me as one that is made up of pre-war skyscrapers, Church spires, domes thrown in with modern towers.

In this respect, Ive always wished Halifax had built for itself more than one or two pre-war 'skyscrapers'.

Agreed. Excited to see Halifax at least adding those modern high rises finally though!

Honestly Halifax is killing it. Everytime I see it on SSP I'm always blown away by how big it seems.

Really all that city needs now to become 'big league' is a rapid transit system, and a stadium with a CFL team.
