the way Five Guys Burgers & Fries runs. They would probably do well downtown Since I don't see any of them having a drive thru window.Plus if they move anywhere close to any other burger places. I don't see them doing well unless there is a large following for Five Guys in Moncton already.

Hope Moncton gets one! I keep bugging my friends back home how great their burgers are, so now they could have a chance to taste them

As for chances of success... it will depends on if the words to mouth is spreading. Five Guys dont do much advertising, and pretty much rely on customers telling how great their burgers are to others to gain new clientele.

Also one of the challenge of Five Guys franchises is the food cost, which is higher than other fast food joint. As the ingredients were originally choosen by the founder's five sons (Five Guys), and some of them (like the mayo and the pickles if my memory serves me correctly) cost a lot more than what usually is available in other burger joints.

The Halifax franchise will probably determined if a Moncton one is viable. But a downtown location near the Centre would be perfect.

Lots of digging going on at the new Costco location on Granite Drive. I would say that construction is beginning in earnest.

Their potatoes in Ontario/Quebec are sourced from Souris PEI, though, so there is that.

I was in Saint-Jerome QC a few weeks ago and they had a Five Guys; if they can support one, Halifax and Moncton can definitely support one.

I was in Elmwood Home Hardware last evening. A customer asked an employee if he was looking forward to moving to their new location, and he said yes, but the new place was at least a couple of years away.

They also have one in Mirabel near the Premium Outlets Montreal.

Their locations help a lot, as they are near the highway where tons of people travel, especially during the weekend to head up north.

Like I said before, they're the perfect type of place that should be near the Centre. People will want a quick bite to eat, but not necessarily want a Mcdonals or a Subway. Plus people from outside will definitely want to check it out.

or....they could try to get a spot near the new Costco and get peoples that are doing their shopping.

Isn't Boom Burger on the Island (Charlottetown) modelled after Five Guys?

Big League Burgers on Mountain Road certainly is (right down to décor and menu).

I think the ideal location for Five Guys would be downtown. Vorkuta is right, there are too many sushi place downtown, and there hasn't been a good fast food burger option downtown since Burger King closed about five years ago.

I don't think Five Guys would necessarily have to go by the new events centre. They could also get lots of business closer to city hall too.

Here is a central location between city hall, and the new event centre. The old Burrito Jax location.

I'm inclined to think that Five Guys would lean towards a more suburban location. Most of their spots i've been to have been in power centres off highways. It's not a sitdown restaurant...you go in, you buy a burger, you leave. More or less. It's not going to be a place to gravitate to in relation to events Downtown.

There's a Five Guys in ultra-downtown Montreal, too, but i'm saying for smaller markets they're more likely to be in power centres.

If you're looking for a reliable chain looking to set up Downtown Five Guys probably isn't your safest bet.

Roots at Champlain Place is now open. If I wasn't sick as a dog (flu), I'd go over and take a picture. Maybe next week..........

It's a relocation - they're moving from Wheeler Park.

I've been a lurker here for some time but I've never had a tip good enough to share but I'd like to throw a little gas on the fire that is the rumours of what is moving into the old Sears store. My wife works at the Canadian Tire in Dieppe and they've been hearing rumours that they may move into the Sears location. She asked the store manager about it and she said he didn't act surprised like it was a silly rumour. She said he just acted kind of sketchy and asked where she heard that.

Again, this is just speculation but if the price was right it for them could be a good fit. More floor space, better traffic in/out, more drop-in customers from mall traffic. I expect the gas bar would stay where it is.

Thoughts?

Thanks for your input. Don't be shy about contributing to the forum.

The Canadian Tire rumour has been circulating for a few months (amongst other rumours). It's possible, but the most likely rumour at present is a call centre for TD Bank. TD had been waiting on renovations to MHS, but these are taking longer than expected to begin. I don't know if this is to be considered a permanent solution, or just a temporary one until MHS becomes available. In either event, using the space for a call centre would be most unfortunate.

Current possibilities for the old Sears space include (but are not limited to):

1) - TD Insurance customer contact centre (temporary or permanent) - most likely
2) - Canadian Tire (possible, but not the best fit for CF since they want Champlain to be a fashion mall)
3) - Simons (everyone's preferred choice, and remotely possible if they also set up in the old Sears space at Halifax Shopping Centre as well).
4) - Hudson's Bay Company (also a good fit for CF, but financial circumstances in the HBC chain make this unlikely at present)
5) - subdividing the space for other retailers/services like Rec Room, Indigo etc (probably the best long term option for CF).

My own opinion is that CF will let TD have the space for it's contact centre in the short term while they come up with a sustainable long term plan for the space.

Canadian Tire is not a tenant seen at CF properties, I very highly doubt that it is coming to Champlain Place. TD call center as a temp is possible until they find a permanent location and for CF to find a real tenant for the space.
