Canada Jetlines delayed again

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-o...d-plane-supply-shortage/article38287172/

Wonder if this will ever fly?

Jetlines press release.... the "delay" is buried at the bottom after their list of highlights and accomplishments....

Via FB. We now know more of what's going into one part of the expansion. A few downtown stores are opening there. Yellowbelly Brewery and Public House (it also has Yellowbelly Takeaway downtown) will be there, not sure if it's just a bar or has the kitchen part too. Newfoundland Chocolate Company. The Heritage Shop - and then mainstream brands.

The provincial government is getting heavy on ensuring all possible entry points to the province give people a strong sense of place and easy links to "wayfinding" lol, and the majority of all visitors to the province come through YYT, so I expect more of the additions will also be local.

So the expansion is basically extending the main floor and adding a... third, I guess? It was already two high in the back.

So this area will go up another floor (pics via FB):

This front part I believe stays the same, and the added floor is above where the rooms begin on the right side:

And here is how it looks with the expansion almost complete in this section of the back. So here I think almost the entire top floor is new:

This is how it was:

^ The hopes for the airport expansion and rebranding of its concessions was a healthy mix of local and national/international stores/restaurants, I think they've done a good job so far with their selections. The "food court" on the main part of the airport will be completely rebranded as well. Tim Hortons may stay, but Coyote Jacks and whatever else is there is getting the boot.

The airport is actually 3 floors high as is, you just can't see it from the front. The first floor is the arrivals hall, baggage and check in. Second floor is departures and security, and the third floor is currently just used as a viewing area. The third floor is planned to be converted into an Air Canada Lounge and restaurant with the renovation.

There was a picture on twitter a few months ago of the expansion area; it's pretty much an expansion of what's already there now (really wish they got rid of that low ceiling)

Thanks, Marty haha. Took me so long yesterday trying to figure it out to describe it.

So if I understand correctly the part that is currently two floors is expanding out over areas where there currently only one floor, not including that area when you first walk in?

Is the current third floor getting any bigger? I thought the footprint is staying the same, and all floors except the first are expanding in size.

It took me a stupidly long amount of time to find the answer to this (good thing I have the day off work)

The footprint of the building has expanded: they've added considerable size to the east side, and will be doing the same to the west side once the first expansion is open. Most of this expansion was done to accommodate moving the security screening downstairs, as well as expanding the check-in section. The expanded second floor looks to be above the newly constructed first floor, but also a bit of it building onto the old section of the building as well, so I guess the answer is a bit of both.

I don't see anything for an expansion of the third floor. Turns out, there's already an Air Canada lounge up there next to the observation area and admin offices. I'm apparently not special enough to be allowed into that lounge, though.

Current YYT Floor 3

Construction on Air Terminal Building & Security Infrastructure Upgrades Underway at Halifax Stanfield

POSTED ON MARCH 14, 2018

Work is underway to upgrade and expand passenger screening, domestic gate area and exterior curb security infrastructure at Halifax Stanfield. These improvements will increase capacity in pre-board screening, provide additional seating and centralized concession space, and provide additional levels of protection to the terminal and the property.

“This is an exciting time at Halifax Stanfield with lots of growth happening at our airport. These renovations will allow us to modernize and expand to meet the growing needs of our passengers and community,” says Joyce Carter, Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) President & CEO. “While we go through this period of construction, we want to minimize the impact to the passenger and visitor experience as much as possible and keep our community engaged on the upcoming changes.”

As a general overview, passenger and visitors of the airport will notice:

Hoarding walls beside pre-board screening along the lower observation deck and through the Ale House.
The hoarding wall inside the pre-board screening awrea will make the space slightly smaller, however, the amount of stations screening passengers will not be affected and the impact on passenger flow will be minimal.
The Ale House will be rearranged, with seating pushed out into the centre court to ensure service is maintained.
The upper observation deck will be closed starting March 20 and will open in early 2019.
For other unrelated projects, hoarding walls are in place in the Domestic Holdroom. Any gates affected will be done in stages and will have no impact on flight operations.
Security upgrades will be made along the curb of the upper road, at tunnel entrances and an access point at the parkade in phases. It will require rerouting of pedestrian traffic, alter access to the parkade, as well as reduced space for passenger pick-up and drop-off.
“We appreciate the patience and understanding of travellers during this time, as we continue to develop Halifax Stanfield – one of Atlantic Canada’s most critical pieces of transportation infrastructure,” Joyce Carter further commented.

For more information visit HalifaxStanfield.ca/development. Construction is scheduled to be complete in Spring 2019.

Very good news: a bus route will finally link the airport to the downtown area, 7 days a week, every 30min:

Quote:

The new terminal in Quebec looks beautiful for the most part, with beautiful décor choices throughout. But couldn't they have done something about the ceiling?

Awwww, YQB's getting all growed up. Finally starting to look like a big boy airport. Nice pics on the expansion. The images are so crisp that I first thought I was looking at architectural renderings.

Completely agree about the ceiling. The use of wood would have been great, especially since engineered wood has been used extensively in Quebec City in the last few years...

This seems to be a perplexingly common trend everywhere these days, even in big-budget buildings. I don't get it... all that money and smart design, and still exposed ceilings like it's a Michael's outlet at a power centre. Wood would have been a huge improvement. But that said, it's still a beautiful terminal.

Exposed ceiling, low ceiling, carpet flooring around the holdroom areas, and baffolds in the ceiling are all meant to cut down on the noise and make the place more pedestrian scale. Air travel is a stressful experience for most people so these design elements make the place seem more familiar. Who gets stressed in a Michaels Power Centre?

They srewed the pooch with YMX. Time to get over it. It's now reborn of sorts as a GA airport and a BBD final assembly line. Aircraft movements are on the rise. I'm hearing talk of control tower services possibly returning. YMX's future looks bright in that regard. No need to complicate things with a passenger terminal that will most likely be underutilized.
How exactly can someone who's in the industry claim that keeping the operations at YUL was the right decision?

You said it yourself, YUL's max capacity is 25-30M. That will be Vancouver's traffic in 2018. Are we going to use Van City, a city SMALLER than Montreal, as a reference(no offence)?

Mirabel's max capacity was basically limitless.

A government with vision would have closed YUL if it needed to and use the land for much more optional development. But no, like I said, every single government since the 1970's has been scared to do anything with the big projects and prefer to develop Montreal as a mid-size city. Big megapolises need big projects.

I think YUL can still grow for 30-50 years with a new terminal with over 50M pax

YQB looks incredible and the terminal looks huge for an airport handling only around 1.7M PAX / year, guess they're future-proofing it. Interior looks far more innovative than most Canadian Airports, somewhat European influenced like much of the design in Quebec, well done! Love the booths in the bar!

Oh definitely. Think of Heathrow and Hong Kong airports. They both have a two runway setup and they handle over 70M pax.
