Are you seriously trying to argue that the corporate campuses with a single land-use is still conventional wisdom in Toronto?

Ever look at a downtown with 100% office uses? From 9-5 the streets are active, but it's pretty much a ghost town all other hours and on weekends unless there is also residential uses interwoven. I'm seriously in disbelief that they're advocating for a multi-acre, single use corporate campus in this day and age, especially on this forum.

Agree with everything you're saying but 'WhipperSnapper' is an old boys club type. He's stubbornly stuck in his ways and intolerant of things being done differently than how he's used to. There's his way and the wrong way. He roundly ridiculed the suggestion that highrises would one day line Yonge Street from the traditional CBD to Yorkville. It's now unfolding exactly that way but he'll never admit that he was wrong.

Btw, lots of people in Toronto have criticized this proposal for not having residential. I'd be shocked if it progressed without residential regardless of how loudly some insist that they're right. Mixed use has been standard practice for many years already.

The article confirms what I said a few posts ago:
An Amazon spokesperson said in a statement that the company plans to visit each HQ2 location as it tries to make its decision.

"Amazon is working with each HQ2 candidate city to dive deeper on their proposals and share additional information about the company's plans. We're excited to visit each location and talk about how HQ2 could benefit our employees and the local community."

So let's not read too much into this. They're going to meet with each of the shortlisted markets.

Classic pompous isaidso.

You're ideas of planning is that 40 storeys on a downtown arterial is a waste of space regardless of lot size and anything under 300 metres tall is not worth your time. You're going to have to be just a little more convincing to those that know your fetish that you were speaking of high rises and not supertalls and megatalls. There's already Bay Street. Yonge is the next logical step. I'm also not convinced the end result on Yonge won't remove most of the character making the street synonymous with Bay Street or, worse, high rise suburbia. You forgot that too.

I'm not opposing residential for this development providing it doesn't become mostly residential. I just don't see it making a whole lot of difference.

I'm not sure why you keep repeating this.

Even if what you say is true, that doesn't mean we can't post and have a discussion about each individual visit. After all, isn't that what the thread is for?

I am increasingly hoping either Columbus or Indianapolis gets it because:

1. Almost nobody is expecting them to get it.
2. As a result of #1, the number of people who will be disappointed, angry, let down, and otherwise enraged and aghast that their city didn't get it will be maximized. If either of those two cities gets it, because nobody is expecting them to, huge numbers of egos will be deflated, much more than if, say, DC or Chicago get it. Of course, boosters in Columbus or Indianapolis will have their egos inflated, but those numbers are much smaller than the numbers of egos that would be inflated if DC, Chicago, Dallas or Atlanta get it.
3. There is also this part of me that is almost hoping they decide to locate in a suburban office park, just to piss off the people who think they won't or shouldn't locate in a suburban office park. Even though, personally, I think it would be nice and preferable to locate in a more urban setting, watching certain people get pissed off and disappointed if they locate in a suburban office park, just might be worth it.

I'm 100% ok with an underdog or another red state city getting Amazon if Atlanta doesn't.

Though preferably, I would want it to be Nashville or Pittsburgh.

Yeah I guess Nashville would be a real underdog too. Though personally my preference is for a Midwestern underdog.

If Chicago doesn't get it we might have to put bnk on suicide watch.

I figured he was persuaded by Fixer Upper on HGTV (the best show ever on HGTV) which takes place in Waco.

Could be. Jeff is trying to settled down. Save some money. Get a little craftsman house outside of town. Maybe trade in that 1996 Honda Accord he's been driving around for the past 20 years for a late model hybrid. Perhaps finally work on that little retail business he's been farting around with all these years...

Nah that would be just Amazon's loss. I'm pleased how things are going on here.

From Site Selection magazine, March 2018

Repeat Defenders

For the third year in a row, Chicago, Omaha and Sioux City are No. 1 in their respective population categories.

Does earning the champion’s crown year after year ever get boring?
Not in the world of economic development.
That’s because every year has a different story — with every project during that year writing its own chapter.

In 2017, according to Site Selection’s Conway Projects Database, the leading metro areas for corporate facility investment projects for the previous two years have held onto their crowns again, as Greater Chicago, Omaha and Sioux City — all defined as multi-state metro areas by the Census Bureau — earn the No. 1 ranking for their respective population tiers.
...

“We’ve spent a lot of time wooing Amazon and other tech companies, and we’ve been successful because we have a lot of young people wanting to live here,” says Zopp. The area’s two- and four-year higher education institutions help feed that pipeline, but so do the neighborhood blocks where they end up living.

“In the war for talent, when the day is done, companies want to recruit talent, and want them to have a good place to live,” Zopp says. Chicago has stayed affordable. “You can be a young millennial and live downtown or a train ride close to downtown, in a cool, hip community, or move a few train stops away and buy a house that’s affordable.” Redfin analysts in December found just 25 neighborhoods that it said fit the bill across 80 major U.S. markets, and more than half were in the Chicago area, which Redfin called “the rare major metro area that has remained relatively affordable and has largely bucked the severe inventory shortage trend seen across much of the country over the past few years.”
That affordability extends to office space.

...

Reflecting a melding of corporate and entrepreneurial cultures, Chicago has more than 100 startup incubators and accelerators and more than 300 corporate R&D centers.

..

Already, the working group that has become CRGC collaborated on initiatives including coordinating a regional response to Amazon’s search for an HQ2. “If the cooperation that was forged in the effort to pitch the Chicago region to Amazon for its second headquarters showed us anything, it’s that we can take job creation and economic development to a new level — a level that benefits everybody — if we work together,” said McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks.

Chicago — with a lift from O’Hare’s planned revamp — again named best corporate relocation target

Published: Mar 6, 2018 9:00 a.m. ET

The Chicago-Elgin-Naperville metro area topped second-place Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land, according to the 64-year-old Site Selection magazine, published by the Atlanta-based corporate investment and expansion consultancy Conway. The rest of the top 5 metros for relocation in populations over 1 million were Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington, then Atlanta–Sandy Springs–Roswell and New York–Newark–Jersey City.

Congrats to Waco! Is it going to be in their downtown or along Lake Waco? Probably along the lake near the airport.
