Blatstein returns focus to Northern Liberties with plan for remaining brewery parcel

Developer Bart Blatstein wants to build a complex of nearly 1,200 rental apartments in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood in what would be his final project on a cluster of properties he began assembling in the early 2000s centered on the former Schmidt’s brewery site.

Blatstein’s plan for a long vacant lot at Second Street and Germantown Avenue calls for six connected buildings with 45,000 square feet of lower-story shops and restaurants around a central plaza. The project would occupy the 4.4-acre lot south of the Shops at Schmidt’s retail building and across the street from the Piazza at Schmidts — now Schmidt’s Commons — apartment and shopping complex, both of which he developed and later sold.

Development completed on 3rd and Market.
I like the integration of the concrete sidewalk and the concrete base of the building. Also like the exterior lighting sconces and lighting under the window bump outs. Simple design that fits in well in Old City and the use of exterior lighting is a very nice touch from a design perspective and adds a small measure of security around the building.

The May Company had been murderifying the vast majority of surviving nameplates well before that as well. By the early 2000s, there really wasn't a whole lot of difference between the offerings at e.g. Strawbridge's, Hecht's, Filene's, or Marshall Field's. Just different signs on the same store, really.

Seriously though, any chance he ever comes back? His constant need to defend Philadelphia and never drop an argument even when he's clearly wrong was beyond annoying. But he also contributed a lot of good info. His new persona seemed somewhat restrained. Like Bart getting back into Philly Development and rewarding us with buildings that don't have rooftop villages, couldn't 1487 similarly change for the good if given a second chance?

Seconded. No one ever explained what specific rule was broken; what the process is for expulsion; if there's a re-admittance process. The point of a moderator is not to stifle dialogue. I really appreciated eBuilder's comments and I don't understand this overzealous response. What purpose is that serving? Being a moderator comes with responsibility and a need to be transparent.

I believe the main mod had given a warning first, even maybe 2 before the ban. So, I think it is just personality/behavior that can't change. But, moving this aside, the comments and discussions were thoughtful/insightful at times. I'm neutral on it.

Banned users can't just register new usernames. Doing so is grounds for immediate permabanning, no questions asked. If he wants to be back on the forum, he needs to (a) spend some time away from it (I would recommend six months) and (b) ask nicely. What he did as "ebuilder" is about the exact opposite of the behavior he needs to show to be allowed a second chance at all (to be honest, the fact that he got away with it for as long as he did kind of pisses me off), and if he does the same thing again he can expect another addition to his collection of red handles.

True, but at the same time the goal of this forum I feel is to foster productive and engaging dialogue and if 1487/ebuilder can contribute to that, I don't see why he can't be a part of the forum moving forward.
