Yes it is surprising. Much of the deforestation is in the foothills but also northern Alberta. Cut lines in the forest for the oil & gas industry also wreak havoc on the endangered woodland caribou. Instead of minimizing development of their habitat the government culls wolves.
A number of years ago there was a big fight with the old PC government because they granted a license for loggers in the Castle mountain region which has a lot of biodiversity in it. Thankfully the NDP government reversed that and turned the entire area into two parks banning all future oil & gas and forestry development. Hopefully Jason Kenney doesn't come along and rip that up, but I'm sure he will if elected. I expect things to continue apace if the UCP wins next election. Fucking idiots let industry rip the environment apart.
