The new part looks more like a jail. Are the windowed "Bars" symbolic?

I'm fine with the Bridgepoint Health Centre, particularly along the DVP. It's not a pretty design, but it's interesting. The cladding is pretty good, and I like the massing. The park/landscaping could be a bit better.

There are 423 of those "bars". They represent the amount of rooms in this development for patients in the medical facility. I know this from a little development series about Toronto that's on YouTube, and possibly some other networks on television.

Interesting that the main culprit is logging. That's not what most people would have pointed to.

Yes it is surprising. Much of the deforestation is in the foothills but also northern Alberta. Cut lines in the forest for the oil & gas industry also wreak havoc on the endangered woodland caribou. Instead of minimizing development of their habitat the government culls wolves.

A number of years ago there was a big fight with the old PC government because they granted a license for loggers in the Castle mountain region which has a lot of biodiversity in it. Thankfully the NDP government reversed that and turned the entire area into two parks banning all future oil & gas and forestry development. Hopefully Jason Kenney doesn't come along and rip that up, but I'm sure he will if elected. I expect things to continue apace if the UCP wins next election. Fucking idiots let industry rip the environment apart.

The article is alarmist. My family comes from a country that is 100% touched by humans. It's far from a shithole. I don't buy into the Agent Smith, "we are equivalent to viruses" vibe. The comparison to the Amazon is headline material but, when you think about it, it's stupid. The Amazon is being taking down for cows. It's permanent. Most of the activity in Alberta will be eventually be reclaimed. We just want the natural resources. We don't need the space for habitation.

Those shots are great. However, I'm actually in favour of Transmountain as it is literally just twinning an existing pipeline and is going to a port that already ships oil. I was 100% against Northern Gateway though for all of the perils it posed to pristine habitat. Ultimately the oilsands are a blight and a danger but they aren't going away any time soon. Transmountain has always been the one project I supported.

Speaking of ugly, this trade war that's brewing over this isn't going away anytime soon either. Funny to see two NDP governments throwing down like this. I think it's mostly about election posturing.

Unfortunately you couldn't be more ignorant on the subject. The main contributing factor for grizzly bear mortality in this province is habitat fragmentation and increasing contact with people. Logging roads and O&G cutlines are scars that remain all too often indefinitely. I seem to remember the province starting to talk with industry about decommissioning them more and industries sharing access points but am not certain how much progress has been made on this front. As I pointed out earlier it isn't tailings ponds or ski resorts that are killing critically endangered woodland caribou it's cutlines and logging roads. We have to cull wolves to help maintain the meager population that exists.

Yeah, Woodland Caribou don't even like crossing forest cuts for power lines which can have a surprisingly negative impact on habitat range (eg. not travelling to calving grounds). They are hugely affected by human impact we wouldn't normally even conceive of as that invasive.

About 8 years ago I did some work with the Endangered Species Act in Ontario and there was a separate unit strictly for the Woodland Caribou strategy in Northern Ontario. While parts of that act were far too restrictive and bordering on nonsensical, hearing about how habitat was being impacted in the North was extremely interesting.
