We take this fact for granted living here. I know NYC is down 300% iirc, but it is still roughly double our murder rate, not to mention the others.

That’s another serious reason, along with money, to choose Austin.

Isn’t Austin routinely mentioned as one of the safest large cities in America?

In case anyone is interested, I keep track of Austin's murders in the thread below. My last update is in the link. By the way, I have 4 murders listed there for the metro so far this year. I need to edit one of those now since the case involved a man who shot another in self defense after that man shot at him in an apartment complex parking lot. It's still homicide, but it's a bit different than murder since it was "justified".

Seems that Amazon is dabbling in health care now...

Dovetails interestingly with this NYT article:

Quote:
SEATTLE — The other week, 218 cities and states lost in the sweepstakes to be the home of Amazon’s second headquarters, failing to make the list of 20 finalists.

But Amazon thanks them for playing.

That is because the hundreds of applications gave Amazon a hidden benefit: free research that the company can mine when picking spots for future warehouses and satellite offices.

Amazon asked every city and state applying for its second headquarters for details about local resources, like available talent and transit options. Local officials were also prodded for tips on local education programs and tax incentives.

The answers — most of which have not been released publicly — essentially do Amazon’s homework for it, providing valuable information that the company otherwise would have needed to dig up on its own or obtain through one-on-one negotiations.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/28/techn...eadquarters-contest-local-expertise.html

Many urbanist-scholarfolks (like Richard Florida) that I read on Twitter believe that Amazon's top 20 cities might all be slated for some sort of significant investment from the company, even if it's not HQ2 itself.

I was thinking of the innovation zone when I posted that...but I still don't want to get my hopes up. I just thought I'd share. Interesting move from Amazon, for sure.

Anyone else find it intriguing that they talked about Austin in the Alexa Super Bowl Ad? It probably means nothing, but it's fun to speculate.

I can't verify it, but I heard Echo (Alexa) development is one of the things Amazon does at their Domain location. That might be why Austin was mentioned in the ad.

Even if that is true, not sure it would have anything to do with filming a commercial. They could easily manipulate it to say any city. Does it mean were getting HQ2, no. But I still find it very intriguing.

The new Amazon med company is interesting to me. Here's some good reporting from CNBC on the "1492" project, which would seem to be a precursor to the announcement yesterday.

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/26/amazon-1492-secret-health-tech-project.html

IMO, 1492 seems tailor-made for the Innovation District and Dell Medical School. Makes me wonder seriously if we aren't pegged for a major Amazon investment one way or another, HQ2 or no HQ2.

I wonder if this would work.

Alexa, where is Amazon going to build their 2nd headquarters?

Why would peacocks be a reference to Austin, though?

It's possible that GSD&M, one of the largest advertising firms in the nation, which happens to be headquartered here across W.6th from Whole Foods did the commercial.

The famous wild peacocks in Austin. My mom is from the NE and wanted to see the peacocks when she visited for the first time.

The guy that asked Alexa to play country music was sitting on a burnt orange couch and had burnt orange furniture.
