The Flatiron is a women's shelter and the former i-Human is City owned and will be put on the market after some of the underlying issues are dealt with.

Yes agree. As soon as I saw this vantage point i knew it needed a picture.

The way I see it....is that the only way is up for the Quarters now.

Absolutely. It was an eye opener to be in such a nice hotel, then look out the window and see this lonely street. Prime for redevelopment. I think it's only a matter of time before the Quarters takes off.

That Gibson Block Flatiron building is such a rare style of architecture especially in Canada. I'm proud that we have one. That is a structure you build around to showcase it. The bottom should be a museum of sorts. I can see the Quarters being a tourist-like /local gathering district if done properly. Years away but I can see it happening . There's other historic buildings in this area to tie it in nicely.

Agree that the flatiron building is a real gem. I believe some restoration work was done on it (correct me if I'm wrong) which is great, but I'm wondering whether anyone knows if there is a possibility of retail, like a coffee shop, going in the base?

I think modelling the Quarters after the Byward Market in Ottawa would be a good move. Try turning it into a spot with good dining, entertainment and retail options so it can compete with Whyte as the place to go on a Friday night. Having a mix of modern with some old school Art Deco inspired buildings would be cool.

The potential is there but there's a long ways to go.

^With the current tenant, no CRU space will be available. The main floor layout does not allow for it. We had discussions with them about this very topic.

Perhaps it's time the woman's shelter moved into a building better suited for their needs - like an actual apartment. I would love to see this "make work '90s scar" of a tenant removed, bye bye Jan Reimer... The Gibson Block needs a tenant that is better suited for the building with retail/restaurant on the main floor and offices above.

The vantage point of the Gibson Block with downtown behind reminds me very much of the same type of vantage point of the Gooderham Building in Toronto with the CBD behind it....

I would think that the women's shelter would want a bigger space. I always hear there's a shortage of available space due to the high domestic assault rates.

It is a very complex situation there with many factors being in play.

A great location exists nearby that they could be moved to. There's a women's prison half a block away that would be better suited as a women's shelter. In a world of demanded equality they need to move the prisoners out into a remote prison on the outskirts of the city instead of a prime location overlooking the river valley.

I'm sure the inside could be renovated to be quite comforting while the outer walls/fence/gating could still offer some security against former abusers looking to re-establish their control.

And just think of the tear-filled photo-op our PM could have as he opens the new shelter.
