There was a flurry of posts recently about a potential "mini campus" Sterling Bay was cobbling together through approvals in Fulton Market.

Dovetails nicely with this, no? Especially given the previous success Google and SB have from 1K Fulton.

Fully agree. i hope that they actually have Chicago in mind, and this "eyeing" shit is just to see if they can snag any more incentives from the city.

That's great news! Is there was a way to break it down by census tract? I would assume that most immigrants in Rogers Park end up west of Clark. East of Clark has changed quite a bit in recent years. For the better IMO.

The Google stuff is good news - hopefully Chicago gets it or something sizable. I have to wonder if this has any influence on Amazon by knowing that Google is seriously considering Chicago for an office of that size. I'm hoping Sterling Bay knows something by adding all this office space there - not to say that if it went to Chicago it would be in the West Loop, but it would at the same time make sense to increase their already sizable footprint there.

Going back to the foreign born stuff here is the totals for India versus China by city. India is more uniform over the suburbs than China here. All together, 33 cities in Illinois outside of Chicago have India born populations of at least 1000. For China that is only 7 cities outside of Chicago. Of the 83,755 people who were born in China who live in Illinois, 44.6% live in the city of Chicago. For India, of the 138,653 people who live in Illinois and were born in India, only 14.1% live in the city of Chicago.

India
1. Chicago: 19,536 people born in India
2. Naperville: 9206
3. Schaumburg: 7419
4. Aurora: 5300
5. Hoffman Estates: 5008
6. Skokie: 3000
7. Des Plaines: 2961
8. Hanover: 2604
9. Mount Prospect: 2560
10. Wheeling: 2279

China
1. Chicago: 37,350 born in China
2. Naperville: 4468
3. Evanston: 2225
4. Buffalo Grove: 1314
5. Skokie: 1042
6. Lilse: 1032
7. Wilmette: 950
8. Schaumburg: 869
9. Palatine: 841
10. Vernon Hills: 793

There aren't a lot of suburbs which have higher foreign born populations for various countries than the city of Chicago but here they are and all of these aren't very much to begin with:
* Portugal: Long Grove
* Laos: Elgin, Rockford
* Fiji: Champaign
* St. Vincent & the Grenadines: Glen Ellyn

I have a question. You really did an awesome job with the numbers of Indian and Chinese immigrants to Chicago neighborhoods.

But are you able to determine if there is any meaningful migration of other ethnic groups to south side neighborhoods? The issue of black flight brings up the question if any immigrants or other groups are replacing them?

Thanks. I have data on 100+ countries for every single census tract in Chicago for 2016 and 2010. I have been putting the data together for every Community Area for every reported country of foreign born population (100+). I definitely have more to come later...

Here's a random interesting one. In 2010 between Rogers Park and West Ridge, there were only an estimated 16 people who were born in Burma living there. In 2016 that estimate is at 712 - an increase of nearly 700 people born there. Uptown had a decrease of 187, but North Park and Albany Park together had an increase of over 100. Those areas together had an increase of 616 people from Burma. I was curious so I looked - found a new Burmese/Malaysian restaurant on Devon that looks like it only opened a few months ago.

Anyone see the news about Crate and Barrel?

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/reale...o-logan-square

Interesting location for office IMO. Metra and L aren't far, but they're not comfortably within walking distance. What's even more interesting is that they are moving here from the Fulton Market.

I can't see that article presently. I may be wrong but I understood that CB2 offices were in Fulton Market and Crate & Barrel proper was in the burbs?

It's for their audio and video production department. The article indicates that the amount of space they'll have in the new building will be not far from double what they currently have.

guess theyre counting on people transferring to the 76 Diversy bus from the blue line

from the Metra you can take the Pulaski bus, though that ones a little more manageable to walk

god help you if you need to get there from the north side tho

That too. But at the end of the day someone was going to fill this space. Good to see it getting reused.

Speak of the devil:

According to this, the influx of Burmese people to Chicago recently has been from the Rakhine state on the western coast just south of Bangladesh. I also found out that there is a Burmese grocery store/market (Shwe Myanmar) up there too and there is a Burmese food importer/wholesaler which was founded in Fort Wayne in 2010 but moved to Chicago sometime in the last small handful of years and located on 19th street near Western Ave (Shwe Hinthar Yeik Mon - https://www.facebook.com/shymllc). There is also a Rohingya cultural center up on Devon.

Pretty crazy:

^ Change is the coolest thing about cities. The plight of these people is awful, but adding them as new and different citizens of our city is awesome. I think I'm going to check out this restaurant...

It's a shame we live in a country that wouldn't just admit 10,000 refugees of this crisis to Chicago. We have the space and the labor market is strong enough.

Yeah change like this is good for cities - their plight makes me think of some of my ancestors who fled on foot for hundreds of miles with no money and almost no possessions because their government was killing them too. They came to America, worked and I guess..I am here today They were very happy they made it to a place that they didn't get nearly as much crap as where originally from.

Let me know how the restaurant is. I have not yet had Malaysian food in the US that is anywhere close to as good as in Malaysia but some of the reviews for this place sound like it could be that good. The Burmese food looks really good of course.

More to come on the foreign born population changes by community areas. Some random stuff in here - such as so far the biggest positive change of foreign born people in Lakeview is people from Spain, Japan, UK, Ghana, and Saudi Arabia. The increase of peoples from Nigeria in West Ridge and Rogers Park together is nearly +1000 too.
