I'm looking forward to the Crescent Heights tower. That would be the one I'd move into. It's location offers views of the entire skyline, the mountains and the ocean (for the upper floors anyway). And it's close enough/far enough from the tourist/event business at LA Live/Staples to be convenient. It will be DTLA's Sierra Tower (see WeHo). And nothing of any appreciable height is going up close to it, or even proposed, save the Onni tower a block away, next to the Mayan on the corner, which is still also only a proposal. I'd love to see that one break ground soon. Knowing the track records of both companies, I'd say both are strong contenders for sooner, than later, groundbreaking.

I'll take the words of urbanize over yours, for obvious reasons. Thanks.

I'm sorry. I'll be sure to tell Steven next time.
I specifically asked in Feb this year because the Los Angeles Chargers fans meet at El Compadre.

Interesting. Did El compadre say when their lease was up? Or just that they would be open the entire season?

I guess it’s possible that the smaller tower at the corner of Flower/Pico could break ground ahead of the larger tower. That one can start with El compadre/hooters still open.

Well, that was a long time ago.

There is an even better way. Ask company officials directly for updates.

Last but not least -> Construction (Groundbreaking) delays are absolutely common. It's a long process and there are too many uncertainties involved.

The question is always the same: "Are they moving forward?" Yes? Great.
So things are working out right now. We are all delighted by that.

Downtown Los Angeles Has Come Full Circle

by Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board (Sponsored Blog)
November 28, 2017

Once the region’s center for culture and business as well as its transportation hub, Downtown has reestablished itself as a major draw for leisure tourists, business travelers and locals alike, with more than $8 billion worth of commercial, residential, cultural or infrastructure projects in progress.

The stunning InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown opened this summer in the $1.1 billion mixed-use Wilshire Grand Center. Situated atop the tallest U.S. building west of the Mississippi River, the 900-room hotel includes a “sky lobby” on the 70th floor and Spire 73, an outdoor bar that boasts spectacular city views.

Upcoming hotels include the 250-room NoMad Los Angeles that’s being built out of Giannini Place in Downtown L.A.’s Historic Core
. Oceanwide Plaza, the mixed-use project that will be built adjacent to STAPLES Center and L.A. LIVE, will include a 184-room Park Hyatt when it opens in late 2018. The W Los Angeles Downtown is slated to open in 2020.

Those hotels are being built for good reason. Downtown L.A. now attracts almost 20 million visitors a year, while hotel revenue per available room (RevPAR) jumped 38% between 2013 and 2016, according to hotel-research firm STR.

^^^ Kinda lackluster and borderline suburban, even for the Arts District. Only 472 units? on 6 acres of land??? I guess.

I know its only been 5 days since November butttttt........ Wasn't the city of LA supposed to pick a "Winner" for the Angels Landing site last month? maybe that's a sign they weren't amused/interested in what was presented?

^ The final scene in your vid....the foreground.....makes me think of the old dtla. Today the area is finally becoming what I've long wanted it to be.

in terms of design & location, this is one of the weaker & also smallest of new projs in dt, E on grand. But it's described as being already 50% occupied. Makes me think of the much criticized apt bldgs from gh palmer, with all their kitschy cloned tuscan architecture. They too have filled up rather quickly.

the strength of a hood can be seen in the way its weakest new devlpt....not just its best or biggest.....does in the economy. I hope e on grand points to dt doing well in attracting new ppl, yrs into the future.

A ‘Grand’ Addition to the Housing Scene

apartments.com

DTLA - In recent years, South Park has seen a wave of either huge towers or multi-phase projects from prominent developers, many with a national portfolio. The Wren apartments is the first part of a five-building, $1.2 billion plan from developer Mack Urban. In the spring, corporate housing giant Oakwood opened a building at Olympic Boulevard and Olive Street. Houston-based Hanover Company has built three seven-story structures in the neighborhood.

E on Grand is on a busy stretch of Pico Boulevard, just a short walk to L.A. Live. Across the street on Grand Avenue is the Wolff Company’s OLiVE DTLA project, while the same developer’s G12 residential complex is at the southwest corner of 12th Street and Grand Avenue. A block east on Olive Street is Mack Urban’s Wren.

Colin Korbelas, a digital video producer who came to E on Grand from the San Fernando Valley, said he wanted to move to Downtown Los Angeles to get a more urban living experience, but struggled to find a space.

“For me it was about finding the right place with the right amenities and what I wanted. I looked at a bunch of other places. I wrote down everything I wanted, which others couldn’t provide,” Korbelas said. “I’d go see other places and they would have 80% of the list. These apartments had everything on my list plus more.”

E on Grand is currently 50% leased, with a target market of professionals looking to move to Downtown.

The construction skip for the south tower of Circa looks like it's come down. Once they close up the glass on that side, the exterior of the tower itself will be done.

République house owners opening restaurant in downtown L.A.’s historic Herald Examiner
December 8, 2017

The flurry of new development among some long-neglected blocks of downtown Los Angeles is pulling in thousands of new residents and overnight tourists — and some high-profile restaurateurs are next. The founders of République, a lauded fine-dining establishment in Hancock Park, have agreed to open a bistro in the former Herald Examiner newspaper building, which is undergoing a renovation.

Built by newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst in 1914, the landmark building on South Broadway has been shuttered since the newspaper went out of business in 1989. But now its once-blighted neighborhood is being transformed with apartments, hotels and offices.

Its showpiece is the lobby, intricately decorated with carved wood panels, hand-painted floor tiles, hammered iron grills, marble and gold. Carved cherubs over the central elevator facade hold shields emblazoned with H, presumably for Hearst. “The lobby is phenomenal. It’s Julia Morgan at her best,” said architect Rob Jernigan, co-managing partner at Gensler, the architecture firm hired for the renovation.

The building will contain multiple restaurants, including one that may occupy the soaring, ornate lobby. But one of the priorities is to reopen the tall, arched windows that once faced Broadway but were boarded up during a nearly 10-year labor dispute that started in 1967. (The action was taken after bricks were hurled through the newspaper’s windows.)

The Manzkes’ establishment would be far from the first restaurant opened in a historic office or industrial building in recent years amid the renaissance of downtown Los Angeles outside the modern financial center. Among the upscale restaurants in renovated buildings are Spring, Bestia, Factory Kitchen and Rossoblu.

Initial plans for renovating the Herald Examiner building called for converting it for residential use, but now it is surrounded with thousands of new apartments including a complex built on former Herald Examiner property directly behind the structure. Two old brick-clad office buildings nearby are being turned into hip boutique hotels, the Proper and the Hoxton. New development is expected on blighted lots across Broadway from the Herald Examiner. Just north on Broadway, the Ace Hotel and theater in a former 1920s office tower has become a thriving recreation destination since it opened in 2014.

The development marks a revival of a part of downtown on the edge of South Park, the Fashion District and the Historic Core that has been economically depressed for half a century.

New devlpt doesn't mean a thing if it doesn't help bring life to a place. All of these places didn't exist, wouldn't have been possible or were in very bad shape not too many yrs ago. the old herald ex bldg was vacant & surrounded by desolation, pershing sq was similar, the former, now demolished hilton...wilshire grand...hotel was a sad relic from the 1950s, & union station was a sad relic from the 1930s.

dtla is becoming more & more what it should have been like over 40 yrs ago, even over 90 yrs ago......

A lot of Los Angeles still has that mysterious LA romance not just in Union Station, but all it’s landmarks and neighborhoods. Every time I visit from San Diego, you get a sense of that old LA Noir. It’s beautiful.
