I am pretty sure we've had this WCE talk multiples times and the conclusion is that it'll remain a single directional commute service. Any expansion is extremely unlikely, if not impossible due to various limitations.

Our rail network is designed for freight.If you want decent passenger rail service you will have to build a new network from scratch.

These sorts of things are best taken to the transit fantasies thread anyhow because upgrading the WCE's service to have new rail lines or sidings for hourly service definitely fall in the fantasy category.

You mentioned WCE having one track.

Having one track, and having one track with passing stations are hardly different. They're both entirely hypothetical now. WCE has no track right currently, and just fits in whenever CP lets them in. In either case, you'd be talking about a new track.

I always thought that with the Evergreen Line in place the WCE could continue the few morning and evening uni-directional trains to downtown and expand to being bi-directional throughout the day east of Coquitlam Station (or if the spur is extended to Port Coquitlam have the WCE become bi-directional through the day form there).

I think that's the only solution that makes sense at this point. There's not enough demand to justify the high cost of adding another track from Coquitlam into Downtown.

You should watch some videos of how the Arbutus Streetcar used to work. They had a baton/flag that they passed between cars to confirm that the track was empty.

The WCE doesn't even use a very long train, so the passing stations would be relatively short sidings.

The interurban service alongside Arbutus was double tracked. You're thinking of Oak Street, which was single tracked and utilized a baton. https://youtu.be/-kbyBbJPi_g

One of those buttons is a horn! Once I was sitting at the front seat when a SkyTrain attendant asked if I could move so he could show a four-year old kid the controls. When we came into one of the stations, he got the kid to press the horn button so we were like a proper train coming into the station. It was pretty awesome!

It's no diesel locomotive engine horn, that's for sure. I guess you could call it wimpy? I don't know what the MkI horn sounds like so I can't compare.

What is it that they don't use anymore? The horn? The Mk Is are most definitely still in service.

Ironically I just watched a video two days ago about this phenomenon of bystanders. You are actually far more likely to get help from a stranger if there are very few bystanders. The more people around, the less likely someone will come to your aid. Essentially everyone assumes that someone else will help.
