Good catch.

Looks a little well developed to be a placeholder unfortunately.

Still could change a decent amount though.

I took a walk on the east side of Burrard Bridge a few days ago. Hadn't done that in many years. I just went part way and then came back.

I see Amacon finally got moving on that Robson property. Was really hoping for a reno instead of a tower above to gut the thing, but land is money. Good bunch of guys tho so it should turn out well. They have a few good pieces of land still downtown that have yet to be touched.

that new tower should help bring some life down that end of robson. Parked down there the other night and went to check out the casino. It was so dead and quiet down there. Boston Pizza I don't think had any customners despite being open.

A card in the mail yesterday from Bosa Properties (and Büro Ole Scheeren and Frankl Architecture) about a NOT-CITY open house, re: rezoning 1040, 1060, 1070, 1080 Barclay Street "to permit 2 residential building that will provide a mix of condo and social housing units."
Wednesday, Nov 1, 5 to 7:30, Century Plaza.

Wow another Ole Scheeren design in the city? I'm interested...

This site has the ability to go quite tall as well I think.

Just did some more digging and this could be a major project announcement.

The areas in question are the entire block other than the Patina and it's in 'Area E' of the west end community plan which is the same as Nelson on the Park (188M) and First Baptist (179M).

Actually not surprising. New York's Times Square has, Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square has, London's Picadilly Circus has, so naturally Vancouver must also have one, but no more than that. The City loves emulating other "greats".

Try suggesting a huge electronic sign on Broadway and Granville inersection and see the whole gang pouncing on you for the kill.

i hope the new signs have better resolution, the current ones are pretty awful, especially after seeing the screens in times square, those are amazing

I did that last weekend when it was partially sunny and it was beautiful looking at the view, including those retro lamps on the fences! However I noticed some tagging on the southwest side of the rail parapet. Hope that won't spread. Also on the yellow tower building facade facing south (you probably didn't walk there), an ornamental concrete casting (shape of an obelisk) seems to be falling apart with concrete exposed. I hope they would fix that too.

I would want to walk over the bridge one late evening when it's foggy. It would be awesome to take a few shots on the bridge deck at that time.

Cool, thanks for posting.
That big a site should be able to provide some separation from the Butterfly / First Baptist tower - but maybe not from the "Nelson on the Park" site.

Now they just need to approve one at Pacific Centre across the street.

Not quite yet. The matter still has the formality of a public hearing, probably on November 30th. It's interesting that most of the opposition (14/24 responses) came from an office on the 4th floor of Nordstrom.

Thanks for posting! I imagine that this site will be limited due to potential shadowing on the park (per the rumor thread), but it should be an exciting event.

58 West Hastings - Open House plus Model and Info

This was the third attempt at hosting an open house for this project. The first event was cancelled due to Vancouver Community College pulling the reservation 6 hours before it was to start. The protesters were back for this event, with the media there looking for a soundbite. The protesters had access to the PA system, and chanted/blocked the boards for the first half hour. Some would move to allow people access to the boards, but not all. The media present (CTV, City TV, and News 11:30) stuck around until the protest was over, and from what I saw made no effort to obtain any other viewpoint.

This is a VAHA project in partnership with the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation. There will be medical/clinical services on the first three floors, with social housing on the rest. While a promise was made by the mayor for 100% Shelter Rate housing, the funding to enable that is not yet in place (hence the protesters). I feel that promise was a mistake as there is a need not only for shelter rate homes, but also homes for the working poor. After all, a bachelor unit provided at 80% of the HILs rate amounts to housing for someone that work full-time earning $15 an hour.
The roof has a very interesting pattern that will be appreciated by nearby residents. A rooftop amenity was not in the cards, as there are strict height limits in the area plan and elevator access would have pushed into that. There is hope for an allowance to add in toppers (lack of a better word) that would create variation in height, and provide the impression that the project is several separate buildings rather than just one. The city is aware the alley space is a big blank wall, and is open to the idea of partnering with a group like the Mural Festival to improve it. I hope the applicants have lurkers in our little forum so they might see the discussions regarding urine splash-back wall treatments or even wall urinals.

This project was rejected by the UDP, and the model reflects changes the applicant has made to incorporate the panel's recommendations. Even though the UDP recommended resubmission, this project will not need to return the panel until after it's public hearing because it's a VAHA project.
